If a missing child returned, the legal father would be tested through fear.

Would he surrender the child to a familiar relative?
Would he obey the child’s trauma signals?

My mother said I passed.
I did not care.
My son had been terrorized for a behavioral experiment.
Helen claimed she infiltrated the current HomeLine cell after faking her death.
The cancer was real.

My grief became rage.

“You always choose the investigation,” I said.
“I chose the children.”
“You didn’t choose Ethan. You used him.”
She did not answer.

A man beside Helen.
My face.
Not Mark.
Not me.
Another Richardson brother.
Thomas Richardson.
Declared dead at birth.
Raised inside HomeLine as a parental replacement.
