Chapter 2 - THE DOCTOR OUTSIDE

Mom did not open the door.
She called 911, the building manager, and her attorney in that order.
Dr. Vale continued speaking through the hallway.
He claimed Liam’s birth records contained an urgent error.
He claimed Daniel had authorized a maternal wellness check.
He claimed police would remove Liam if I refused medical evaluation.
Every sentence sounded official enough to frighten someone exhausted.
My mother had spent thirty years working as a hospital compliance attorney before retiring.
She recognized the performance.
“Slide your identification beneath the door,” she said.
Silence.
Then footsteps moved away.
The elevator camera later showed Dr. Vale leaving with Vanessa.
Building security stopped them in the lobby.
Police arrived.
Vale’s medical license was active.
His specialty did not exist.
“Family Protective Medicine” was a consulting company paid by wealthy clients during custody disputes.
He had signed the incapacity petition.
Without examining me.
The police entered the apartment and preserved the security footage.
An ambulance took me to a different hospital.
My incision had partially reopened.
I was dehydrated, anemic, and dangerously undernourished.
Dr. Naomi Evans stabilized me.
Then she reviewed my obstetric history.
Her face tightened.
“Maya, your chart lists a cesarean delivery three years ago.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Were you ever hospitalized for pregnancy loss?”
I remembered heavy bleeding after an early miscarriage.
Daniel told me doctors performed a procedure while I was sedated.
The chart called it fetal demise at twenty-one weeks.
I had never seen the baby.
The record now listed live birth.
Female infant.
Transferred to Carter Family Research Nursery.
Mother: Maya Carter.
Legal guardian: Vanessa Carter.

My first baby had not died.
She had been given to my sister-in-law.
