Chapter 3 - THE FIRST CHILD

Her name was Sophie.

Three years old.

Vanessa had raised her as her own daughter in another state.

Family photographs showed Vanessa holding a blond toddler whose face appeared familiar in ways I had never allowed myself to examine.

Daniel told everyone Sophie came through a private adoption.

The adoption was my stolen child.

Mom admitted she had suspected something.

After my “miscarriage,” the hospital refused to release remains.

Daniel handled every document.

Helen challenged him once.

I defended him.

My mother backed away to avoid losing me completely.

That silence now stood between us.

“You should have told me.”

“I tried.”

“You stopped.”

“Yes.”

She did not excuse it.

The attorney Sofia Castellano filed emergency petitions for Liam and Sophie.

Vanessa argued Sophie knew her as mother.

That relationship mattered.

It did not legalize abduction.

The court ordered no sudden transfer.

Sophie entered supervised protective placement while facts were established.

Then Daniel appeared through his attorney.

He claimed I agreed to let Vanessa adopt the first child because I suffered severe postpartum psychosis.

A video showed me signing.

I looked conscious.

Calm.

The document was titled VOLUNTARY KINSHIP PLACEMENT.

I remembered none of it.

Toxicology from preserved blood samples showed strong sedatives.

Real signature.

No informed consent.

Then investigators found the same drug in the pain medication Daniel left beside my current bed.

He had been weakening me before Liam’s birth too.
