Chapter 4 - THE MILK COOLER
The medical cooler Daniel removed from the freezer was recovered from Vanessa’s SUV.
Inside were my milk bags, blood tubes, newborn screening cards, and a hospital bracelet marked LIAM CARTER — MOTHER: VANESSA.
They were preparing a paper trail showing Vanessa had fed and medically managed him from birth.
The clinic registered her as intended parent.
Why?
Vanessa could not carry children after a hysterectomy.
Daniel promised her both of mine.
In exchange, Vanessa helped him gain control of Carter Development, the company we built together.
Our marriage agreement said my shares transferred temporarily if I became medically incapacitated.
The custody plan and business plan were the same.
Remove the mother.
Take the child.
Take the company.
The handwritten note was evidence of abandonment staged by Daniel.
The empty cabinets were meant to prove neglect.
The unpaid bills were photographed before he removed the money.
Then the camera showed another person entering the apartment.
My father-in-law, Richard Carter.
He placed the black duffel bags by the door.
He knew.
The conspiracy expanded from husband and sister to the entire Carter family.
Then Liam’s newborn blood test showed an unusual genetic marker.
Sophie carried it too.
