Chapter 10 - THE CPS REPORT

Child Protective Services called on a Tuesday morning.

Someone had reported that Lily lived in a “violent home.”

The allegation cited my slap at the party.

It mentioned loud arguments between Daniel and me.

It claimed Lily had been emotionally traumatized by “maternal aggression.”

I almost laughed.

Then I realized what it meant.

An investigator was coming to our house.

Her name was Dana Cole.

She was professional.

Kind without being naive.

She interviewed me.

Daniel.

Then observed Lily playing.

Dana knew about the chain incident because police records were already part of the referral.

She asked whether Lily had been restrained at home.

“Never.”

“Do you physically discipline her?”

“No.”

“Has she seen violence between you and Daniel?”

“No.”

Then she asked about the party.

I told the truth.

“I slapped Margaret.”

“Do you believe that was appropriate?”

“No.”

“Would you do it again?”

I looked through the open doorway at Lily stacking blocks.

“No.”

That answer came easily.

I wanted Lily protected.

Not taught that protection meant losing control.

Dana later told us the report would remain open while she gathered information.

She did not remove Lily.

She did not threaten to.

Margaret had counted on us panicking.

Instead, we cooperated.

Then Dana asked something unexpected.

“Has anyone else made allegations about Lily's parentage?”

Daniel and I looked at each other.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

We explained the forged DNA report.

Dana requested documentation.

That mattered because the CPS accusation had unintentionally placed Margaret's manipulation into another official record.

Still, the damage was emotional.

That night Lily asked whether “the lady” was going to take her away.

I held her until she fell asleep.

Then I went into the bathroom and cried so she wouldn't see.

Daniel found me there.

“This is because of Mom.”

“Probably.”

“I'm going to call her.”

“No.”

He stared at me.

“She reports us, and you want me to do nothing?”

“I want you to stop giving her reactions she can record.”

That was a lesson I had learned from my own slap.

We documented.

We called our attorney.

We let Dana work.

Three days later the report was closed as unsubstantiated.

Dana wrote that Lily appeared bonded, appropriately cared for, and safe in our home.

Relief lasted eleven minutes.

Then Howard called.

The forensic accountant had found an account statement missing from the trust archive.

The bank supplied it directly.

On the same day Margaret paid BGH $320,000, BGH transferred $250,000 to a brokerage account.

Account owner:

Margaret Bennett.

The money had not merely improved her lake house.

It had gone directly to her.

The financial motive was becoming personal.

Then Daniel noticed the date.

The transfer happened three days before Margaret first mentioned doing a DNA test.

📖 The direct transfer put trust money in Margaret's own account, and its timing showed her paternity obsession began immediately after she realized Daniel might gain auditing rights. 👇
