Chapter 14 - THE OFFER

Margaret made the offer anyway.
Not directly.
Through Daniel's attorney.
If Daniel supported her petition to remain sole trustee and agreed not to pursue past transactions, Margaret would transfer $500,000 from her personal assets into an account for him.
She called it “family resolution.”
Our lawyer called it what it looked like.
A settlement proposal with conditions.
Not necessarily illegal by itself.
But revealing.
Daniel stared at the terms.
“She thinks I'll sell this.”
“Will you?”
He looked at me.
“No.”
I believed him.
Then came the part that hurt.
A year earlier, maybe he would have.
Not because he was greedy.
Because he believed family conflict should be solved privately, even if “privately” meant surrender.
Margaret knew her son.
She had simply miscalculated how much the chain changed him.
Daniel rejected the offer in writing.
Margaret withdrew it.
Then she attacked our marriage.
Her attorney subpoenaed limited records relevant to her claim that Daniel was acting under my undue influence.
Our own texts became discoverable within defined scope.
Arguments.
Accusations.
The night Daniel showed me the fake DNA result, I had texted:
If you believe her over me, maybe Lily and I should leave.
Margaret's lawyer highlighted it.
There.
Claire threatened to leave with the child.
I wanted to scream.
Our attorney remained calm.
“Context exists.”
But the sentence still looked ugly alone.
Daniel was deposed.
“Did your wife threaten to take Lily away?”
“Yes.”
My heart stopped.
Then he continued.
“After I confronted her with a forged DNA report and questioned whether our daughter was mine.”
Margaret's lawyer objected to the characterization.
Daniel corrected himself.
“A report I later learned was forged.”
He didn't lie to protect me.
He gave the whole truth.
That mattered more.
Then I was questioned about the slap.
I admitted it again.
“Were you angry?”
“Yes.”
“Did you intend to hit Margaret?”
“Yes.”
“Do you regret it?”
“Yes.”
“Because it hurt your case?”
“No. Because my daughter saw me lose control.”
That answer wasn't strategy.
It was true.
The deposition exhausted me.
When we got home, Lily ran toward Daniel holding a stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy!”
He dropped to his knees.
She had been cautious with him since the party.
Now she climbed into his arms.
I watched his face.
Something in our family shifted back into place.
Not the old place.
A better one.
Then our attorney called.
The forensic accountant had expanded the trust review.
BGH's largest payment wasn't to Margaret.
$720,000 had gone to a company called Northbridge Ventures.
Owner:
Ryan Bennett.
Daniel went silent.
So did I.
His brother had sworn he didn't know where the money went.
Now an entity in his name had received almost three quarters of a million dollars.

Our trusted ally had suddenly become the most suspicious person in the case.
📖 Ryan had helped us expose Margaret, but $720,000 had flowed into a company bearing his name—and his explanation would either save him or fracture the family completely. 👇
