Chapter 19 - HATTIE BREAKS
Hattie asked for a proffer.
Her lawyer emphasized that she was not confessing guilt automatically.
She wanted prosecutors to hear what she knew before deciding whether cooperation mattered.
I was not in the room.
Good.
I did not need to see her explain the chain.
Detective summaries came later.
Hattie admitted the custody plan began with Michael and Ralston.
She claimed Ralston told them that if I were removed as trustee, a court might authorize trust money for housing and education-related stability.
That legal theory was not completely absurd.
The way they tried to create eligibility was.
Michael needed to appear financially stable enough to gain custody but distressed enough to justify trust support.
Hattie’s paid caregiver role helped.
Her house could become Lily’s proposed primary residence.
Then a trust petition could argue mortgage stabilization preserved Lily’s home environment.
“Did Ralston tell you to coach Lily?” investigators asked.
Hattie said he told them to “document what Lily already experienced.”
Michael transformed that into rehearsal.
Did Hattie believe I drank excessively?
“No.”
Did she believe I left Lily alone?
“No.”
Did she believe I was dangerous?
“No.”
“Then why make Lily say it?”
Hattie answered:
“Because Michael said we only needed the court to believe it long enough to get everyone safe.”
Everyone.
Except Lily.
The investigator asked about the chain.
Hattie cried.
She said Lily kept refusing.
She became angry.
Used the dog chain as humiliation.
The first time, Michael was not there.
When he saw what she had done, he should have stopped it.
Instead he said:
“If it works, don't leave marks.”
That matched the texts.
Hattie admitted kennel punishment happened four times.
The chain twice.
Food withheld during practice at least three times.
I had to stop reading.
Claire summarized the rest.
Hattie claimed she never intended serious injury.
That might affect charges.
It did not change Lily’s experience.
Then came the betrayal.
Hattie told investigators Michael had asked her to take full blame if the videos surfaced.
“He said I was old and the court would go easier on me.”
I stared at Claire.
Michael had used his own mother too.
Hattie had sacrificed money.

Now he wanted her to absorb criminal responsibility.
She finally understood the hierarchy.
Michael first.
Then his company.
Then Hattie.
Then me.
Then Lily.
Everyone served his need to prevent collapse.
Hattie produced texts Michael had deleted from his phone.
One said:
If Penelope finds the practice videos, tell everyone it was your idea. I never asked for punishment.
Another:
You can survive a misdemeanor. I can’t survive losing the company and Lily.
That message destroyed his effort to distance himself.
He anticipated exposure.
Planned blame.
