Chapter 2 - THE REST OF THE VIDEO

Lily whispered, “Don’t watch it here,” before we even reached my car.

That was enough.

I locked the doors.

Michael came running out of the house.

He slapped one hand against my window.

“Penelope!”

I started the engine.

“Open the door!”

Lily folded herself against the passenger seat.

I drove.

Michael called seventeen times before we reached the emergency room.

I answered none of them.

A nurse photographed the marks around Lily’s neck.

A doctor examined her throat and ordered imaging because she complained that swallowing hurt.

When the nurse asked what happened, Lily stared at me.

“You can tell her.”

“Grandma put the dog thing on me.”

The nurse’s face stayed neutral.

Professionally neutral.

“Has Grandma done that before?”

Lily whispered, “Yes.”

My stomach dropped.

“How many times?”

“I don’t know.”

I had to turn away.

A social worker named Dana Reeves arrived within forty minutes.

She asked to speak with Lily alone.

I agreed.

Then I finally sat in the hallway and opened the video.

My hands shook so badly I almost dropped the phone.

The recording began twelve minutes before I arrived.

Hattie stood over Lily beside the food basket.

“You know the rules.”

Lily cried.

“I said it right.”

“No, you didn’t.”

Hattie pulled the chain.

“Again.”

Lily spoke through tears.

“Mommy gets mad and throws things.”

My breath stopped.

Hattie answered, “Again.”

“Mommy drinks the red wine every night.”

Again.

“Mommy leaves me alone when she goes out.”

Again.

They weren’t disciplining her.

They were rehearsing her.

The video continued.

Lily tried to take the chain off.

Hattie pushed her hands away.

Then Michael entered the room.

My husband.

The man Lily had begged me not to show.

He looked directly at the chain around his daughter’s neck.

He did not remove it.

He did not yell.

He did not look surprised.

He simply asked Hattie:

“Is she saying it without hesitating yet?”

I covered my mouth.

Hattie shook her head.

“She keeps changing the part about the wine.”

Michael crouched in front of Lily.

“Listen to Daddy.”

Lily’s shoulders shook.

“If somebody asks who scares you at home, what do you say?”

She looked at him.

“Mommy.”

“And who yells?”

“Mommy.”

“Who leaves you alone?”

“Mommy.”

Michael smiled.

“Good girl.”

I paused the video.

I couldn't breathe.

Then I forced myself to continue.

Lily whispered, “But Mommy doesn’t do those things.”

Michael’s expression hardened.

“You want Grandma to keep practicing?”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

“Then say what you’re supposed to say.”

He walked away.

Hattie locked Lily inside the old metal dog kennel.

The rest of the video was almost twenty minutes long.

Michael appeared twice more.

Both times he knew exactly what was happening.

Both times he allowed it.

The last thing he said before leaving the room was:

“Once she tells the evaluator the same story, Penelope loses everything.”

I stared at the frozen screen.

Everything.

Not just Lily.

Something else.

Dana emerged from the interview room.

Her expression told me Lily had spoken.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to discuss immediate safety planning.”

I stood.

Then my phone buzzed.

A text from Michael.

I know what you saw. Come home before you make this worse.

I read it twice.

He wasn't denying the video.

He was warning me.

📖 Michael’s own words proved the abuse was part of a rehearsed story about me, but the emergency custody paperwork he filed that night revealed what “everything” actually meant. 👇
