Chapter 15 - THE MESSAGE BEFORE BIRTH

On Meadow’s eighteenth birthday, Sofia Castellano brought the final sealed Parker file.
We opened it with independent witnesses.
Inside was the original trust deed, my father’s investigation notes, and a hospital photograph.
A newborn girl.
Blonde hair.
Tiny green identification band.
Name: MEADOW PARKER.
Date: eleven years before my daughter’s birth.
Not Nora.
Another infant.
Status: deceased.
No verified body.
The file suggested every later Meadow was created to replace the first missing child.
The Parker family did not begin with inheritance.
It began with one granddaughter who disappeared from a hospital.
Robert spent decades trying to recreate her identity through other girls.
A dead child became justification for endless replacement.
Then Sofia unfolded one final page.
Security message archive.
The earliest recovered text was sent by Judith.
Timestamp: eight years before Daniel met me.
Find a woman named Sarah Harper. Her father has the evidence. Daniel should marry her.
My marriage had been planned before our first date.
Below it, Robert replied:
And the child?
Judith answered:
We’ll create Meadow after Sarah trusts him.
Meadow stood beside me reading every word.
Her face remained calm.
Then her phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown sender.
The text read:
SARAH... THIS MESSAGE WAS SENT BEFORE MEADOW EVER CAME HERE.
The same sentence Emma had spoken in the hallway years earlier.
A video attachment opened.
Judith stood in the bright suburban hallway.
Young.
No gray hair.
Electric clippers in her hand.
A little girl sat on the rug.
Freshly shaved head.
Crying.
The child looked exactly like Meadow at eight.
Judith said:
“Hair grows back. She needed to learn humility.”
A younger Robert stood near the front door.
Daniel, still a teenager, watched from the staircase.
The little girl lifted her face toward the camera.
“Mom... please take me home.”
My voice answered from behind the camera.
I had been fifteen at the time.
I did not remember this.
The camera turned.
A teenage girl wearing my face held the phone.
Not me.
A replacement Sarah.
Judith stepped into the doorway.
The scene repeated exactly.
Then the video froze.
Text appeared:
PROTOCOL ORIGIN — SARAH PRIME FAILED.
CONTINUITY SARAH APPROVED.
Meadow looked at me.
“Mom... are you Sarah Prime?”
“I don’t know.”
The front door of our current home opened by itself.
Bright afternoon light filled the hallway.
Shaved hair lay scattered across the carpet.
A woman stood in the doorway wearing my teal V-neck shirt, ripped jeans, and gray sneakers.
My face.
Older.
Scarred.
She held an eight-year-old girl with Meadow’s face.
The child clung to her.
Behind them, Emma—now twenty-six—held Judith’s old phone.
She scrolled upward.
Her face drained.
“Sarah,” she whispered, “this message was sent before either of you were born.”
The woman wearing my face looked at me.
“You raised Meadow Two.”
She pointed toward the child beside her.
“I raised Meadow One.”
Meadow’s phone displayed another incoming message.
FROM: DANIEL PARKER.
He remained in federal prison.
The text said:
BOTH GIRLS ARE COPIES. THE ORIGINAL IS STILL IN JUDITH’S HOUSE.
The replica house security feed activated.
A hidden door beneath the hallway rug opened.
Below it sat a child’s bedroom.
Pink walls.
Rows of green shirts.
A teenage girl stood at the center with hair reaching her waist.
She turned toward the camera.
Her face was not Meadow’s.
It was mine.
She held electric clippers against her chest.
Then she said:
“Mom... please take me home.”
Every light in our hallway went out.
May you like
The front door slammed shut.
And Judith’s old phone began ringing from somewhere beneath the floor.
