Chapter 2 - THE GIRL UPSTAIRS

The officers entered with body cameras running.
Judith insisted the crying came from the television.
Emma said no television was on.
The sound came again.
A child calling for Daniel.
Police searched the second floor.
Inside the locked guest room, they found an eight-year-old girl with blonde hair cut to the same uneven length as Meadow’s.
She wore the same oversized green T-shirt.
Same jeans.
Same gray sneakers.
Her name was Lily Bennett.
At least, that was what the foster-care papers beside her claimed.
But the temporary placement form listed her future name as Meadow Parker.
Judith had prepared a replacement daughter.
The haircut was meant to make both girls resemble each other.
The photographs would create confusion.
If Daniel claimed I arrived with the wrong child, the family could demand emergency verification while both girls entered protective custody.
Then they would control the paperwork.
Sofia opened my father’s letter.
It said the Parker family had used identity substitution before.
Children with similar appearances.
Forged school records.
Conflicting custody files.
My father discovered it after Daniel proposed to me.
He warned me indirectly.
I thought he was being overprotective.
He left the original evidence sealed until any attempt to alter Meadow’s identity occurred.
That trigger had now happened.
Police separated Judith.
Lily refused to speak until Meadow gave her a stuffed rabbit from the SUV.
Then Lily whispered:
“Daniel said your mom would trade us.”
Meadow looked at me.
“I wouldn’t.”
I knelt between them.
“No child is being traded.”
The girls had been taught otherwise.
Then DNA testing showed Lily was not unrelated.
She was Daniel’s biological daughter.
Born one month before Meadow.
Different mother.
May you like
Same father.
Daniel had kept a second daughter hidden for eight years.
