Chapter 10 - The Wedding Was a Deadline
The major twist wasn’t the debt.
It was the timing.
Why rush the wedding?
Why spend so extravagantly when the family was financially strained?
Because Brenda’s fiancé, Michael, had insisted on a prenuptial agreement.
Brenda had told him she possessed substantial family assets.
She didn’t.
Evelyn feared that if the wedding finances collapsed publicly, Michael would discover how much of Brenda’s lifestyle was debt before they married.
So the wedding became a deadline.
Keep appearances intact until vows were exchanged.
Three earlier clues suddenly changed meaning.
Evelyn’s upgrades weren’t random vanity.
David’s desperation about “embarrassing” the family wasn’t simply loyalty.
And the use of my trust accelerated during the final three months because Evelyn was racing toward the wedding date.
Then I asked Brenda:
“Did Michael know about your debt?”
She started crying.
“No.”
That stunned me.
“You married him yesterday without telling him?”
“I was going to.”
“When?”
“After the honeymoon.”
I stared at her.
The entire Bennett family was built on postponed truth.
Tell Claire after the money is replaced.
Tell Michael after the wedding.
Tell David about the lake loan later.
Tell everyone about Raymond never.
Every deception was temporary.
Until it wasn’t.
Brenda’s marriage began on the same foundation mine was collapsing under.
I told her:
“You need to tell him.”
She nodded.
“Will you?”
Silence.
That was when I realized the final outcome wouldn't depend solely on exposing Evelyn.
Every Bennett had to decide whether they would keep using secrecy as a form of protection.
