Chapter 8 - I Removed Leo From the Bennett Family’s Rules
I stopped unsupervised contact between Leo and Evelyn.
Immediately.
David objected once.
Then saw my face and stopped.
Brenda apologized to Leo.
He wouldn’t look at her.
That hurt her.
It should.
She had not hit him, but she had stood twenty feet away while Evelyn did.
Everyone in that family had learned the same survival skill.
Do not challenge Evelyn publicly.
I wasn’t teaching that to my son.
The financial review continued.
I also started individual counseling.
Not because I believed I was unstable.
Because I needed to understand why I had accepted so many blurred boundaries for so long.
The answer was uncomfortable.
I liked being needed.
Dad had warned me.
I resented the Bennett family for treating me like an ATM, but I had also built part of my identity around being the person who could fix everything.
Tuition shortfall?
Claire helped.
Medical deductible?

Business crisis?

Generosity without boundaries had become a system.
Then Evelyn called.
“You’re punishing Leo by keeping him from his grandmother.”
“No.”
“He loves me.”
“He’s afraid to eat around you.”
Silence.
Then:
“You’re exaggerating.”
I ended the call.
That evening Jonathan called with news.
The lake house valuation was accurate.
But selling it wouldn’t solve everything.
There was a loan against it.
$310,000.
David didn’t know.
Brenda didn’t know.
Only Evelyn had signed it.
“What did she borrow three hundred thousand dollars for?”
Jonathan paused.
“We don’t know yet.”
Suddenly the wedding money was no longer the largest financial secret in the family.
