Chapter 12 - ELIZABETH’S ANGER

My sister was furious with me.
Not Nora.
Me.
At first I rejected it.
Then listened.
“Grace told me she was worried.”
“And you didn’t tell me.”
“She asked me not to unless she found proof.”
“You should have.”
“You would have dismissed it.”
“That’s convenient.”
Elizabeth stared.
“You dismissed everything that made the house inconvenient after Grace got sick.”
That hurt.
“Meaning?”
“You let Nora run the house because you didn’t want to.”
True.
“You stopped reading financial summaries.”
True.
“You put Grace’s memorandum in a safe for three years.”
True.
“And then you act shocked that someone learned you weren’t looking.”
I became angry.
“You’re blaming me for being drugged.”
“No.”
She did not raise her voice.
“I’m blaming you for pretending your only role in this story is victim.”
Silence.
She continued:
“Nora chose every crime she committed. You chose absence.”
Different.
Again.
I apologized.
Not immediately.
Two days later.
