Chapter 12 - ACCOUNT 4412

Bethany worked part-time in Dad’s office for three years after college.
Mostly payroll.
Deposits.
Vendor paperwork.
She remembered account 4412 because Dad called it the “equipment reserve.”
But some deposits weren’t equipment-related.
They came from checks payable to Mom.
Consulting fees.
Reimbursements.
Property-management payments.
Mom never worked for the company.
“Why did you deposit them?”
“Dad told me to.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know.”
“Guess.”
“Thousands.”
“Total?”
“Maybe hundreds of thousands over years.”
My stomach tightened.
“Did Sarah know?”
Bethany looked down.
“She asked me once.”
“When?”
“Before she got really sick.”
“What did you tell her?”
“Nothing.”
“Why?”
“Dad said she was trying to destroy the company.”
Everything became a loyalty test.
Dad versus Sarah.
Family versus outsider.
Silence versus betrayal.
“What happened after?”
“Sarah came to the office.”
My pulse changed.
“She confronted Dad?”
“Yes.”
“About 4412?”
“I think.”
“What did you hear?”
Bethany closed her eyes.
“She said, ‘You stole from both companies.’”
Both.
Dad’s company and Sarah’s.
Then:
“Dad told her she had no idea what Mom had done.”
I stared.
“What did that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did Mom come?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“They fought.”
“About?”
“Sarah said Mom’s name was on transfers.”
My hands curled.
Mom wasn’t a passive spouse.
She was financially involved.
“Then what?”
“Harlan showed up.”
“Of course.”
Bethany nodded.
“They went into Dad’s office.”
“Sarah too?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Twenty minutes.”
“When she came out, she was crying.”
My chest hurt.
Sarah had never told me.
Maybe she was protecting me.
Maybe she was gathering proof.
Maybe she knew I would confront Dad before she had enough.
Bethany continued:
“She told me one thing.”
“What?”
“Take care of Mark.”
I looked away.
That was Sarah.
Even while discovering my family was stealing, she worried about what truth would do to me.
Dana traced account 4412 through old settlement records.
It was an operating account Dad failed to disclose during the first fraud settlement.
Reserve B’s Exhibit C likely contained the missing transaction history.
Then Dana found a bank reference inside Sarah’s blue-envelope report.
Account ending 4412.
Authorized users:
Dad.
Mom.
Harlan.
Three people.
Not Bethany.
Not me.
Then outgoing transfers.
One recurring recipient:
MJL Property Group.
We searched incorporation records.
Manager:
Mom.
My stomach turned.
MJL owned two rental buildings and a lake house I had always assumed belonged to Dad.
Purchased over seven years.
Funding source:
Unclear.
Maybe stolen company money.
Maybe Sarah’s inflated invoice proceeds.
Maybe both.
If Rosie’s trust gained voting rights and demanded company books, Mom’s properties could become exposed.
That gave her a personal motive.
She wasn’t helping Dad because she was obedient.
She was protecting her own assets.
Megan whispered:
“That’s why she was so calm.”
“What?”
“At dinner.”
I remembered.
Bethany had done the physical part.
Dad threw the glass.
Mom managed the narrative.
She had the most to lose from records becoming visible.
Then Dana obtained another item from the trust bank.
A successor-trustee application submitted Saturday morning.
Before Easter dinner.
Applicant:
Mom.
Supporting evidence list:
Photographs of child injuries.
Video statement from Rosie.
Family witness statement.
Mark’s violent incident footage.
My skin went cold.
The application listed the exact evidence they planned to create before most of it existed.
Photographs of injuries.
Rosie’s statement.
My violent reaction.
The form had been completed the day before they hurt her.
Premeditation in plain language.
Then one attachment name appeared:
MARK INCIDENT — FINAL.mp4.
Uploaded Sunday at 6:18 p.m.
Seven minutes after I arrived.
Three minutes before Dad threw the glass.
Someone had been editing the footage while the confrontation was still happening.
Who?
File creator metadata:
HP-FINANCE.
Harlan Pierce.
Harlan wasn’t at the dinner table.
