Chapter 8 - THE BLUE ENVELOPE

Megan drove home at 2:10 a.m.
She returned forty minutes later carrying a small fireproof box.
Inside were Sarah’s personal documents.
Old passport.
Medical directives.
Letters for Rosie.
Then a blue envelope.
Sealed.
Mark, Megan, Dana.
All three names on the front.
Megan’s hands shook as she opened it.
First item:
Photocopy of the investment consent Dad and Harlan wanted Sarah to sign.
Unsigned.
Second:
A version with Sarah’s signature.
She had written across it in red ink:
NOT MY SIGNATURE.
My stomach turned.
Harlan had already produced a signed version while Sarah was alive.
Third:
A handwriting-comparison report Sarah commissioned privately.
The examiner concluded the signature appeared digitally reproduced from an older document.
Not a legal ruling.
But enough to show Sarah had investigated.
Then Dana pulled out another page.
“Mark.”
“What?”
“Your signature.”
A trustee authorization.
Supposedly signed by me.
I had never seen it.
It permitted Harlan Pierce to obtain financial information related to Rosie’s trust for “family planning purposes.”
Date:
Three years earlier.
Before Sarah died.
“Did you sign?”
“No.”
“Sure?”
“Absolutely.”
I remembered refusing Harlan access.
He called me paranoid.
Dad laughed.
Apparently they solved the refusal with paper.
Megan found a fourth document.
Bank inquiry log.
Harlan had attempted to obtain Rosie's projected trust balance eighteen months before Sarah died.
He had been planning around the money before the trust was even fully funded.
Then Sarah had written a note:
Harlan is not acting alone.
Below it were three dates.
Each matched a visit by Dad.
Then one more.
Bethany.
I stared.
“Bethany knew back then?”
Megan shook her head.
“Maybe she just visited.”
Evidence first.
I searched Sarah’s emails for the date.
One message.
Sarah to Megan:
Bethany asked me today what happens to Rosie's money if Mark dies.
My skin went cold.
Megan continued reading.
She claimed Dad was updating family records.
I don’t believe her.
Another email from Sarah:
Bethany asked whether a guardian controls the trust.
I changed the subject.
My sister’s involvement began before the seventy-three thousand dollars.
Before Easter.
Maybe Dad had been using her for information for years.
Then the final item in the blue envelope.
A printed screenshot of Dad texting Sarah.
You’re making this harder than it needs to be.
Sarah:
Rosie’s trust is not yours.
Dad:
Everything connected to my family is my concern.
Sarah:
Not this.
Dad:
If Mark cannot make adult decisions, someone will have to.
That language.
Adult decisions.
Incapacity.
The current scheme had roots years earlier.
Then one text stood out.
Dad:
You think Megan saves you? She won’t be around when this matters.
Megan looked at me.
“What does that mean?”
I didn’t know.
Sarah’s reply:
Is that a threat?
Dad:
It’s reality.
I felt cold.
Not because I believed Dad had planned to hurt Megan.
Because Sarah had felt threatened enough to ask.
Then Dana found a handwritten note on the back of the screenshot.
If they ever try to remove Mark as trustee, ask the bank for Reserve B.
I stared.
“Reserve B?”
Dana shook her head.
“I’ve never heard of it.”
Megan hadn’t either.
We called the trust bank’s overnight security line.
After identity verification, the representative confirmed Rosie had two linked trust accounts.
Primary.
Balance:
$2.3 million.
Reserve B.
Restricted.
Balance unavailable by phone.
I stopped breathing.
“What is Reserve B?”
The representative could not disclose details without the original trust schedule.
Dana searched her digital files.
Nothing.
Megan looked at the blue envelope again.
Sarah had hidden not only evidence of forgery.
She had hidden evidence that Rosie’s trust contained something neither Dana nor I knew existed.
Then the bank representative said:
“There was an attempted Reserve B inquiry yesterday.”
My chest tightened.
“By who?”
“Successor trustee claimant.”
My mother.
They weren’t only after the $920,000.
May you like
They were trying to reach something larger.
