The man was not Arthur.
His name was Robert Carter.
Arthur’s identical twin.
Declared dead at birth.
Raised by another family after their father made a private arrangement with a hospital administrator.
Arthur learned about Robert only ten years before he died.
He kept the truth from Daniel because Robert had been linked to a financial investigation involving Carter Maritime Holdings.
The black sedan belonged to First Atlantic Bank.
Robert was not there to claim the account.
He was there to stop Daniel from draining it.
The bank receipt showed two authorizations were required.
One from Helen.
One from Arthur or his verified emergency successor.
Daniel had attempted to activate Arthur’s side using old estate credentials.
Robert’s appearance triggered a fraud alert.
Daniel denied everything.
The bank’s access logs showed his home computer.
Melissa claimed someone hacked them.
Then Ethan quietly said:
“Dad was on Grandpa’s old laptop last night.”
The room changed.
Daniel looked at his son.
Not lovingly.
Warningly.
That look told me the money was only part of the danger.
Robert handed me a sealed envelope.
Arthur’s handwriting covered the front.
HELEN — OPEN ONLY IF DANIEL PUTS YOU OUT.
