Chapter 7 - SOPHIE

Her name was Sophie Carter.

Fourteen.

Raised in a private school under another surname.

Arthur discovered her existence during the clinic investigation.

He paid for her care but never brought her into the family because Melissa threatened to leave with Ethan and Emma if he did.

Arthur chose secrecy.

Sophie grew up believing she had been abandoned.

Her trust held controlling shares in Carter Maritime.

The emergency account was designed to protect her claim.

Daniel and Melissa wanted access before Sophie turned fifteen.

My eviction would have given them control over the house address required for trust verification.

The porch was not only about me.

It was about a hidden child they wanted erased.

Sophie refused immediate family contact.

She wanted records.

Not reunion.

Then she sent me one message.

Grandma Helen, Grandpa said you were the only person who never knew I existed.

That was true.

And it hurt differently.

Then Arthur’s system released another receipt.

A payment made two days after his funeral.

Recipient: Margaret Carter.

My name was Helen.
