Chapter 12 - Claire’s Final Choice

Security searched the surgical level.

Claire’s phone was found beside a service exit.

The message threatening her brother remained on the screen.

A second message had arrived.

BRING THE ANTIDOTE TO PARKING LEVEL C. COME ALONE.

Richard ordered Daniel Cross to search the garage cameras.

A woman in navy scrubs appeared pushing a supply cart toward the lower parking deck.

Claire.

She carried a refrigerated case.

The antidote.

A black SUV waited beside the exit ramp.

Thomas Hale stood next to it.

Beside him was a young man with his hands tied.

Claire’s brother.

She stopped twenty feet away.

Thomas held a gun against Noah’s neck.

“Put down the case.”

Claire obeyed.

“Let him go.”

Thomas smiled.

“You nurses always think kindness is a contract.”

He motioned toward one of his men.

The man collected the case.

Noah shouted, “Run!”

Thomas struck him.

Claire moved forward.

The gun turned toward her.

Daniel Cross connected to the garage speaker.

“Thomas.”

Richard’s brother looked up at the camera.

“Daniel. Still alive?”

“Release them.”

“Why?”

“Because federal tactical teams are entering the garage.”

Thomas laughed.

“No, they aren’t.”

The security map showed why.

Someone had sealed every access door remotely.

Caleb controlled the hospital systems.

Thomas placed Noah into the SUV.

Claire grabbed the antidote case before the second man could fully secure it.

He caught her arm.

She drove the cart into his knees.

The case slid across the concrete.

Noah kicked open the rear door and threw himself out.

Thomas fired.

The bullet struck Claire in the side.

She fell.

Noah crawled toward her.

The antidote case stopped beneath another parked vehicle.

Thomas walked toward it.

Then the parking gate exploded inward.

Not from federal agents.

From a black armored sedan.

Mara drove through the broken barrier.

She had left her safe location.

The car struck Thomas’s SUV broadside and pinned it against a column.

Mara stepped out with two investigators behind her.

She wore a dark coat, her hair pulled back, and a scar ran along her jaw from the crash Adrian arranged eighteen months earlier.

Thomas stared at her.

“You’re dead.”

She smiled.

“So is your brother. Apparently, the Hale family struggles with paperwork.”

One investigator recovered the antidote case.

The other secured Thomas’s injured accomplice.

Thomas grabbed Claire and pulled her upright, pressing the gun against her temple.

Mara stopped.

“Let her go.”

“Give me the case.”

Claire looked toward Mara.

Then toward Noah.

Her breathing weakened.

“Don’t.”

Thomas tightened his arm around her.

Mara held the case out.

“You want it? Take it.”

He stepped closer.

Mara released the handle.

The case fell.

Thomas instinctively looked down.

Claire drove her head backward into his face.

Mara’s investigator tackled him.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Claire collapsed.

Noah caught her.

Mara took the antidote and ran toward the service elevator.

Upstairs, my monitor alarms intensified.

Dr. Harris prepared blood products.

Richard held my hand.

Adrian watched from behind security.

“You won’t make it,” he said quietly.

Richard turned toward him.

“Why do you want her dead so badly?”

Adrian looked at me.

“Because she never loved me.”

I forced my eyes open.

He continued.

“She loved the company. She loved you. She loved what I was supposed to become.”

His voice cracked.

“But she never loved me.”

The accusation might once have broken me.

Now I saw it for what it was.

A justification created by a man who believed love meant permission.

I pulled the oxygen mask aside.

“I loved you enough to forgive you.”

He stared at me.

“That was my mistake.”

The elevator doors opened.

Mara emerged holding the antidote.

But before she reached us, Caleb’s face appeared on the corridor monitor.

“Administer that dose,” he said, “and I release every confidential Hale defense file to the highest bidder.”

Richard looked at the screen.

Mara kept walking.

Caleb smiled.

“Choose carefully.”

May you like

Mara handed the case to Dr. Harris.

“We already did.”
