Chapter 9 - The Nurse’s Secret

I woke inside a freight elevator.

Dr. Harris stood beside me, manually ventilating through the oxygen mask.

Daniel Cross held the emergency control button.

Security officers restrained Adrian against the opposite wall.

Claire sat on the floor, crying silently.

The explosion above never came.

The champagne bottle had been a decoy.

The timer stopped with three seconds remaining.

Its only purpose was to force the evacuation and create chaos around my medication.

Someone wanted my death to look like a medical complication during an emergency.

Dr. Harris checked my pupils.

“Mrs. Hale, can you hear me?”

I blinked.

“Good.”

Adrian looked disappointed.

The freight elevator descended toward a secure surgical level.

Mara remained connected through Daniel’s phone.

She had heard Claire’s confession.

“Who has your brother?” Mara asked.

Claire wiped her face.

“A man named Thomas.”

Richard’s brother.

“How long?”

“Three days.”

Claire’s younger brother, Noah, owed money to an illegal gambling operation controlled through one of Thomas’s companies.

When he could not pay, Thomas took him.

Claire was ordered to report my hospital location, medication list, and medical changes.

“Did you alter the IV?” Dr. Harris asked.

“No.”

“Who accessed the pump?”

“A respiratory technician came in before you called Adrian.”

Dr. Harris checked the staff log.

No respiratory technician had been assigned to my room.

Another infiltrator.

Adrian leaned his head against the elevator wall.

“You’re all wasting time.”

Daniel Cross looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because my mother’s survival no longer matters.”

My body went cold.

Mara asked, “What did you do?”

Adrian smiled.

“Nothing.”

Daniel tightened his grip on Adrian’s shoulder.

“What did Thomas do?”

“Ask Richard.”

The elevator reached the secure level.

Doors opened onto an underground surgical corridor protected by armed federal agents.

At the far end stood a man in a dark coat.

Richard.

He looked older, thinner, and painfully alive.

For five years I had imagined seeing him again.

In my dreams, I ran into his arms.

In reality, I lay broken on a hospital bed while he stood beneath fluorescent lights, unable to move toward me.

His eyes filled.

“Ellie.”

I turned my face away.

Pain crossed his expression.

Adrian watched us.

“You see?” he said. “She hates you too.”

Richard approached slowly.

“I deserve it.”

“You deserve worse,” Adrian replied.

Richard ignored him.

He placed one hand near mine but did not touch me.

“I’m sorry.”

My voice was weak.

“Five years.”

“I know.”

“You watched him destroy everything.”

“I was trying to expose Thomas.”

“You exposed me instead.”

He closed his eyes.

Mara interrupted.

“Richard, Adrian said Eleanor’s survival no longer matters.”

Richard looked at our son.

“What have you done?”

Adrian smiled.

“At midnight, I transferred the Hale voting shares.”

“That transfer failed.”

“Mine did.”

The wording mattered.

Mara understood first.

“Someone else filed a transfer.”

Adrian’s smile widened.

Richard turned toward Daniel Cross.

“Check the board registry.”

Daniel opened a secure tablet.

A new controlling shareholder had appeared at 12:01 a.m.

Not Adrian.

Not me.

Not Richard.

A woman named Mara Voss.

Every eye turned toward the phone.

Mara was silent.

May you like

Adrian laughed.

“Go ahead, Mother. Ask your loyal attorney why she owns your company.”
