Chapter 6 - The Man Inside My House

The line from my house remained open.

Footsteps moved across the marble foyer.

The woman Adrian hired whispered, “Mr. Hale is dead.”

The man replied, “So I’ve heard.”

Mara ordered her investigators to trace the call.

Dr. Harris watched my monitor.

“Mrs. Hale, stay with me.”

I could not look away from the phone.

The man in my house spoke again.

“Tell Adrian the safe room is empty.”

The intruder asked, “Who are you?”

“You already know.”

A struggle followed.

Furniture shifted.

Someone cried out.

Then silence.

Mara called into the line.

“Richard?”

The man answered.

“You kept her alive.”

It was not a question.

Mara’s voice softened.

“I tried.”

“I owe you.”

My eyes filled with tears.

No recording could imitate the way Richard spoke to people he trusted.

But grief can make certainty dangerous.

I forced myself to remain still.

“Where have you been?” Mara asked.

“Not on an open line.”

“Eleanor deserves an answer.”

“She deserves more than I can give tonight.”

I tried to speak.

The oxygen mask fogged.

Dr. Harris lifted one edge slightly.

“Richard?”

The line went silent.

Then the man said my name.

“Ellie.”

No one had called me that since the plane crash.

My heart monitor spiked.

The doctor replaced the mask immediately.

“Mrs. Hale, breathe slowly.”

Richard’s voice broke.

“I’m sorry.”

I wanted to ask whether he was alive.

I wanted to ask why he left me alone.

I wanted to tell him what Adrian had become.

But the words could not escape.

Mara stepped in.

“Richard, Adrian is at the penthouse. Eleanor is in critical condition. Men connected to him attempted to enter the ICU.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“I have been watching him.”

“For how long?”

“Five years.”

The answer stunned everyone.

If Richard had watched Adrian, he had watched me too.

He had seen my grief.

My isolation.

My son’s growing control.

And he had stayed hidden.

Anger rose through the pain.

I pulled the mask aside.

“Coward.”

The single word scraped my throat.

The line became silent.

Richard did not defend himself.

“You’re right,” he said.

Dr. Harris replaced the mask.

I turned my face away.

Mara asked the question I could not.

“Why?”

Richard explained only part.

The plane crash had not been an accident. Someone inside Hale Global sabotaged the aircraft.

Richard survived because he left the plane moments before takeoff after receiving a security warning.

The body identified as his belonged to another passenger whose records had been altered.

Federal investigators persuaded Richard to remain legally dead while they traced the conspiracy.

“What conspiracy?” Mara asked.

“Corporate theft, political bribery, and illegal control of Hale defense contracts.”

“Was Adrian involved?”

“Not then.”

My chest tightened.

“Then who?”

Richard paused.

“My brother.”

I had not heard Thomas Hale’s name in twenty years.

He vanished after Richard removed him from the company for selling proprietary designs.

We assumed he fled overseas.

Richard continued.

“Thomas built the network. Adrian joined him later.”

Mara’s voice sharpened.

“Adrian knows his uncle is alive?”

“Yes.”

“Does he know you are?”

“Not until tonight.”

At the penthouse, Adrian had left the office through a hidden service corridor.

The investigators discovered the room empty.

Security cameras showed him descending toward the underground garage.

He entered a waiting car.

The driver was an older man with white hair.

Mara received the image.

She enlarged it.

Richard saw through a secure feed from my house.

“That’s Thomas.”

Adrian had escaped with the uncle who taught him how to dismantle our family.

Richard’s voice became urgent.

“Mara, do not let them reach the hospital.”

“Why would they come here?”

“Because Eleanor is not the only person in that ICU.”

Dr. Harris looked around.

There were six rooms on the secured floor.

Richard continued.

“In Room Twelve is a federal witness who can identify Thomas.”

Dr. Harris checked the board.

Room Twelve belonged to an unidentified crash victim admitted one hour before me.

The patient had no listed name.

Only a security code.

Then the hospital power flickered.

The nurse looked toward the ceiling.

Emergency generators activated.

The cardiac monitors remained on.

But the electronic door locks released.

From the hallway came the sound of an elevator arriving.
