Chapter 10 - Karen Didn’t Want Ella’s Money for Herself
The major twist came from Karen’s attorney.
During financial disclosures, we learned she had never attempted to withdraw money from Ella’s account.
Never contacted the custodian.
Never forged paperwork.
Never tried to directly steal the inheritance.
That surprised me.
Then why the trust?
Why the appraisal?
Why the obsession?
The answer was in her estate-planning notes.
Karen’s father had died when she was fourteen.
He left everything to her older brother because he believed sons should inherit the family business.
Karen got nothing.
Her mother told her:
“That’s just how families work.”
Her brother later sold the business for millions.
He never shared.
Karen never forgave him.
Three earlier clues suddenly changed meaning.
Her obsession with equality between Ella and Tyler.
Her rage whenever Ella received recognition.
Her desire to pool both children’s assets.
Karen wasn’t primarily trying to enrich herself.
She was trying to prevent Tyler from becoming what she had been.
The child with less.
That motive was human.
The way she acted on it was destructive.
Because Tyler wasn’t actually being excluded.
He had his father.
His own savings.
His own inheritance possibilities.
Karen had projected a thirty-year-old wound onto two children who were not competing.
And then she punished Ella for winning a race because every victory looked like proof Tyler would someday be left behind.
I met Karen with our counselor present.
“Why didn’t you tell me about your father?”
She stared at the floor.
“I did.”
“No. You told me he favored your brother.”
“I thought that was enough.”
“It wasn’t.”
She wiped her eyes.
“I didn’t want Tyler growing up watching another kid get everything.”
“He isn’t.”
“I know that now.”
“No. You knew it before. Matt’s account is almost the same size as Ella’s.”
She flinched.
Then finally admitted the truth.
“It wasn’t about the numbers.”
I waited.
“It was about how it felt.”
That was the major twist.
Not greed.
Unresolved humiliation.
