Chapter 6 - Karen Had Been Planning a Trust of Her Own

Karen wanted me to create a new family trust.

She had drafted preliminary documents with an attorney I didn’t know.

Not signed.

Not finalized.

But detailed.

The proposed trust would place the house, several investment accounts, and future life-insurance proceeds into one structure for “both children.”

Sounds fair.

Until I read the management provisions.

Karen would become trustee if I died.

She would control distributions until Ella and Tyler turned twenty-five.

My father’s existing protection for Ella would effectively become part of a broader family pool if certain transfers were made first.

“Did you show this to me?”

“I was going to.”

“When?”

“When you were ready.”

That phrase.

The adult version of hiding vegetables in food.

“You were going to ask me to move Ella’s assets into a trust you controlled.”

“I’m her mother now.”

“No. You’re her stepmother.”

Karen flinched.

It was crueler than necessary.

But the distinction mattered legally and emotionally.

She sat down.

“I have spent three years raising her.”

“Yes.”

“I’ve taken her to school. Doctor appointments. Dance. Birthday parties.”

“Yes.”

“And none of that counts?”

“It counts. It does not make her inheritance yours.”

Karen’s face changed.

“I never said it was mine.”

“You drafted a structure giving yourself control.”

“For both children.”

Then I noticed something else.

Tyler’s biological father, Matt Reynolds, already maintained a college fund.

A substantial one.

Karen had never disclosed the balance.

I asked.

She refused.

That told me enough.

The fairness argument wasn’t actually about ensuring Tyler had equal resources.

It was about bringing Ella’s assets under Karen’s authority.

Then another document surfaced.

A recent appraisal of my house.

Requested by Karen.

Without telling me.

Estimated market value:

$1.1 million.

I looked at her.

“Why did you appraise property you don’t own?”

She didn’t answer.

And for the first time, I stopped asking whether she had plans.

I started asking how far those plans had already gone.
