Chapter 15 - Under Oath

Florence looked different in deposition than she did at parties. Smaller, somehow. Not kinder. Just less protected by lighting.

Steven Rusk kept objecting on instinct. Marta kept walking around him.

Under oath, Florence denied planning anything financial around the wedding. She denied instructing Jonathan to obtain my signature. She denied touching my belongings beyond “cleaning up the room Charlotte vandalized.” She denied calling me a gold digger.

Then Marta placed the wedding-night still image on the table.

Florence’s chin lifted. “That proves nothing.”

Next came Emily’s voicemail transcript.

Then the property filings.

Then the false pearl insurance reference.

Piece by piece, Florence’s poise developed hairline cracks. Reward came when she contradicted her own police complaint about the pearl set’s storage location and admitted the necklace she wore at the wedding “may not have been the insured item.”

Fraud. Small, but revealing.

Marta followed by asking whether Florence knew what a spousal guaranty was. Steven objected. Florence answered anyway.

“Of course I know what it is. My husband dealt with those documents all the time.”

That single answer placed her understanding far above the clueless-mother act Steven wanted.

Major payoff.

Then came the twist that reopened the family wound. While questioning Florence about prewedding contacts, Marta introduced the alias account F.M. Estates. Florence denied using it. Nina then testified regarding the forwarding logs from Elaine’s account. Steven objected again, but the foundation had already been laid.

Florence’s attorney requested a break.

During that break, Nina pulled me aside in the hallway with her tablet in hand. “We found the second internal access source connected to your cloud breach.”

“Who?”

“Not Luke. Not Elaine directly.”

She turned the screen toward me.

A remote-session credential had been initiated from a family-office workstation registered to Graham’s executive floor, using a token temporarily borrowed by his chief financial officer for donor-presentation work. The trail was messy enough to muddy, clean enough to implicate more than one careless person.

The betrayal network was wider than I wanted.

Back in the deposition room, Florence returned angrier than before. When Marta asked whether Jonathan had ever been violent with previous partners, Florence snapped, “Boys pushed by weak women do weak things.”

No one in the room moved for a second.

Even Steven looked pained.

Afterward, Reese said quietly, “That answer just changed settlement posture.”

At the elevator, my phone buzzed. Luke.

Need to see you tonight. It’s about Elaine and the page Florence took. I was wrong about who she’s protecting.

Need. Protecting. Wrong.

Every noun felt dangerous.

📖 Florence damaged her own story under oath, but Nina’s new access trail widened the breach around my family—and Luke said the missing page was tied to someone even more deliberate than Jonathan. 👇
