Chapter 5 - Public

By four o’clock, my face was on three local blogs and one national gossip account that loved rich-family messes. The headline on the biggest post read: Bride Soaks Groom and Flees Wedding Night Meltdown.

The clip attached was nine seconds long.

It showed me throwing the bucket.

It did not show Florence dumping laundry at my feet. It did not show Jonathan grabbing my arm. It definitely did not show him slapping me.

Someone had cut the truth down to a villain they preferred.

Marta swore under her breath when she saw it. “That came from inside the house.”

Reese had already sent takedown notices, but false stories moved faster than corrective paperwork. By evening, strangers were calling me unstable, abusive, entitled, dramatic, spoiled, and my personal favorite, a washed-up socialite pretending to be working class.

I didn’t read the comments after the first twenty.

Instead, I went to the urgent care clinic Marta recommended to supplement the physician notes from the hotel. The nurse took photographs under bright exam-room light while I held still and stared at a poster about concussion symptoms. When she asked if this was the first time Jonathan had hurt me, the room went very quiet.

“Yes,” I said.

Then, after a pause that tasted like shame even though it shouldn’t have, I added, “It was the first time he let me see it.”

Back at Reese’s office, we mapped the next moves. Annulment for fraud. Petition for a protective order. Civil claims for battery and misrepresentation. Referral package to the bank’s special-investigations unit. Nina was working separately on the internal breach.

Then Emily Hart called.

Emily had been my maid of honor since we were nineteen and getting into trouble for sneaking cupcakes out of the student-center freezer at Ohio State. Her voice now was thin and wrecked.

“Charlotte, I need to tell you something before someone else does.”

I put her on speaker with Reese’s permission.

“A month ago,” she said, “Jonathan asked if your family was really as private as you said. I told him almost nothing. I swear. Just that your father ran the foundation side and that you hated people treating you differently because of money.”

I closed my eyes.

“Why are you telling me now?”

“Because Florence called me this morning from Jonathan’s phone. She said I’d better remember that you were drinking last night and that you’d been jealous all week.”

Reese wrote something down.

Emily kept going. “And because I found a voicemail from two nights ago. I never listened to it because the rehearsal dinner got crazy. It’s Florence. She thought she hung up, but she didn’t. Charlotte… she says, ‘Once she signs, we can deal with the rest.’”

A small reward. A real one. But it came with another question.

Signs what?

Before I could ask Emily to send it, my email chimed. The sender field made my stomach drop.

Counsel for Jonathan Miller.
