Chapter 15 - TWO FATHERS

Peter wanted to be Daniel's father immediately.

Daniel couldn't do it.

They met four times.

Coffee.

Lunch.

A walk.

Then an argument.

Peter asked why Daniel still called Henry "Dad" when discussing childhood.

Daniel stared at him.

"Because he was my dad."

"I know. I just meant—"

"No, you don't."

Peter's face tightened.

"I lost thirty-six years."

"So did I."

"I was threatened."

"You still chose."

Peter stood.

"So I'm supposed to spend the rest of my life apologizing?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"No. But I'm not supposed to pretend those years happened either."

Peter left.

Daniel came home furious.

Then ashamed for being furious.

I understood.

DNA could answer who created you.

It couldn't manufacture history.

Meanwhile, my estate claim moved forward.

Margaret's attorneys proposed mediation.

She offered to return the entire remaining value she could trace from Elizabeth's inheritance, plus interest calculations subject to expert review.

Andrew advised patience.

"We don't know the full accounting."

"I don't want to destroy her."

"That's not the legal question."

He was right.

The legal question was what belonged to Elizabeth's descendant.

The emotional question was what I wanted justice to look like.

Those weren't identical.

Emma became the center that kept me sane.

She had stopped crying when she saw the patio.

We removed the chain completely.

Daniel tore the attachment hardware from the column himself.

The birthday decorations were gone.

The photograph of her cake remained.

I hated that Margaret had contaminated her first birthday.

So Rachel suggested something simple.

"Give her another party."

Not a replacement.

A reclaiming.

We planned a small afternoon gathering for the following month.

No Margaret.

Daniel struggled with that.

"She's my mother."

"I know."

"She did something horrible."

"I know."

"I still miss her."

"I know."

He looked at me.

"How can all three be true?"

"Because you're not a machine."

He laughed once.

Then cried.

Later that week Peter returned.

Not to Daniel.

To me.

He handed me a box of letters he had written Daniel over the years but never sent.

"I thought he might want them someday."

"Give them to him yourself."

"He doesn't want me."

"He doesn't want pressure."

Peter absorbed that.

There was growth in the fact that he listened.

Then he told me something Margaret never had.

Henry met Peter secretly three times.

Henry wanted Daniel to know the truth after Samuel died.

Margaret refused.

Peter had blamed Henry for years.

The letters showed otherwise.

One contained Henry's handwriting:

When Daniel is old enough, we tell him together.

Margaret had prevented that too.

Daniel read the note.

His anger toward Peter softened.

His anger toward Margaret deepened.

Then Margaret requested one supervised meeting.

Not with Emma.

With Daniel.

He agreed.

And he went carrying Henry's letter.

📖 Daniel entered the meeting demanding to know why Margaret stole his chance to know both fathers, and her answer finally revealed what she feared more than losing money. 👇
