Chapter 4 - THE MAN AT MY DOOR

At 5:41 p.m., my front-door camera recorded Margaret arriving.

She entered using Daniel's emergency key.

At 5:49, she left.

Empty-handed.

The DNA papers were still visible on my bedroom dresser in an indoor hallway-camera frame timestamped 5:51.

At 6:02, another person entered.

A man.

Baseball cap.

Dark jacket.

He knew exactly where he was going.

He went upstairs.

Three minutes later, he left carrying my documents.

I froze the image.

"Do you recognize him?" Rachel asked.

"No."

But Margaret did.

I sent her a screenshot.

She called within thirty seconds.

"Where did you get that?"

"Who is he?"

"Claire, lock your doors."

My anger disappeared.

"What?"

"Lock everything."

"Margaret, who is that man?"

She whispered a name.

"Peter Shaw."

I had never heard it.

"What does Peter Shaw want with Emma's DNA?"

"He doesn't want Emma's DNA."

"Then what?"

"The old sample."

"Whose sample?"

Margaret began crying.

It was the first time in twelve years I'd heard her cry.

"Daniel wasn't supposed to find out this way."

My chest tightened.

"Find out what?"

She wouldn't answer.

Instead she asked whether Daniel was still in Chicago.

I lied.

"Yes."

"Keep him there."

"Why?"

"Because Peter will go to him next."

The call ended.

I contacted police about the burglary and provided the footage.

I did not accuse Margaret of arranging it because I had no evidence she had.

Then Daniel called from the airport.

His flight had been moved earlier.

I told him someone had broken into our home.

"Who?"

"Peter Shaw."

Daniel stopped.

That silence again.

"You know him too?"

"No."

"Daniel."

"I know the name."

From Henry's funeral.

A man had approached Daniel outside the cemetery and asked whether Henry had left "the Bennett papers."

Margaret stepped between them and ordered the man away.

Daniel had forgotten the name until now.

Peter Shaw had been circling this family for nine years.

The old DNA sample finally gave us a concrete question.

Was Peter the archived donor?

The lab couldn't confirm it without authorization.

But Daniel remembered something else from Henry's locked box.

A photograph.

Henry, Margaret, and another young man standing outside a medical clinic.

Written on the back:

Peter — June 1992.

The same year Case 88-417 was created.

I stared at Daniel through the phone screen.

"Your mother knows who Emma matched."

"I think she does."

"Then why chain Emma?"

Daniel's face tightened.

"Because Mom doesn't lose control when she's angry."

"What does she do?"

"She loses control when she's scared."

At 11:38 p.m., headlights swept across my front windows.

Daniel wasn't due for another twenty minutes.

A car stopped outside.

Peter Shaw stepped onto my porch carrying the stolen DNA documents.

And he rang the bell.

📖 Peter returned the papers voluntarily, but the reason he stole them exposed the first truth Margaret had buried since 1992. 👇
