Chapter 5 - PETER SHAW

"I think Emma Bennett is my granddaughter."

Peter Shaw said it while standing six feet inside my front door.

I didn't invite him farther.

Rachel stayed upstairs with Emma.

Two officers had already been notified he was present.

Peter knew.

He seemed relieved.

He placed the stolen documents on the entry table.

"I'm returning these."

"You burglarized my home."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Margaret called me this afternoon and said Emma's test had triggered the old file."

That contradicted Margaret's denial.

"She sent you?"

"No."

Peter looked exhausted.

"She told me to stay away. I did the opposite."

He was sixty-one, broad-shouldered, with gray hair and a scar along his chin.

I saw nothing obvious of Daniel in him.

Then Peter removed an old photograph from his wallet.

Margaret at twenty-nine.

Peter beside her.

His arm around her waist.

They weren't friends.

"Margaret and I were together before she married Henry."

"Daniel is thirty-six."

Peter nodded.

The arithmetic landed.

"You think you're Daniel's father."

"I've known I'm Daniel's biological father since 1992."

I sat down.

"Known?"

"DNA confirmed it."

Case 88-417.

The first major payoff.

Emma's test had not exposed an affair involving me.

It had exposed Daniel's paternity.

Peter explained that Margaret became pregnant while dating him.

Her family despised him.

Henry Bennett came from money, stability, and the right social circle.

Margaret married Henry before Daniel was born and told Peter the baby wasn't his.

Years later Peter demanded proof.

The 1992 DNA test confirmed Daniel was his son.

"Why didn't you tell Daniel?"

Peter's expression hardened.

"Margaret threatened to destroy me."

"How?"

Peter had recently started a construction company. Margaret's father controlled financing on several projects.

She offered a deal.

Peter stayed away from Daniel.

The Bennett family would leave his business alone.

Peter accepted.

I wanted to condemn him.

Part of me did.

But I was beginning to understand this family had been built from people choosing silence because truth cost too much.

"What does the signature mean?"

Peter pointed at the authorization page.

"That isn't mine."

"Whose?"

Before he answered, the front door opened.

Daniel walked in.

He saw Peter.

Stopped.

Peter stood.

For thirty-six years, father and son looked at each other without knowing how to occupy the same room.

Daniel turned to me.

"Claire?"

I handed him the photograph.

Then the DNA papers.

He read them.

His face emptied.

Finally he looked at Peter.

"Are you saying you're my father?"

Peter swallowed.

"Biologically, yes."

Daniel looked toward the staircase where Emma slept.

Then at me.

Then back at Peter.

"My mother chained my daughter because Emma's DNA could expose this?"

Peter shook his head.

"No."

That surprised all of us.

"Margaret has lived with my paternity for thirty-four years. She wouldn't panic like this over something she already survived."

He tapped the authorization page.

"She's afraid of the man who signed that."

Daniel stared at the signature.

"Who is he?"

Peter answered.

"Your grandfather."

Henry Bennett's father.

Walter Bennett.
