Chapter 8 - CASE 88-206

Susan adopted me privately in 1993.
No agency.
No public listing.
A sealed attorney placement.
She had always told me my birth certificate was delayed because of hospital paperwork.
That was a lie.
"My biological mother?"
Susan wiped her face.
"I promised never to tell."
"She's alive?"
"I don't know."
"Name."
Susan looked at Daniel.
Then Peter.
"Claire—"
"Name."
"Elizabeth Whitmore."
Margaret's younger sister.
The room disappeared around me.
Elizabeth Whitmore.
I knew the name only from family photographs.
Margaret had told me Elizabeth died young and childless.
If Elizabeth was my biological mother, then Margaret was my biological aunt.
Daniel and I weren't biologically related because Peter, not Henry, was his father.
But socially, legally, and historically, our families had been intertwined before either of us knew.
Suddenly Margaret's hostility toward me had a different shape.
"Does Margaret know?"
Susan nodded.
"She found out before your wedding."
Daniel stood.
"She knew Claire was Elizabeth's daughter and said nothing?"
"She wanted the marriage stopped."
I remembered.
Margaret had hated our engagement.
She called me unsuitable.
She accused me of chasing Bennett money.
She begged Daniel to reconsider.
I thought it was snobbery.
Maybe some of it was.
But there had been another reason.
"Why didn't she tell us?"
Susan answered carefully.
"Because revealing Claire's identity would reopen Elizabeth's estate."
There it was.
Money.
Inheritance.
Power.
Elizabeth Whitmore had inherited substantial assets from Samuel.
When she supposedly died childless, those assets passed partly to Margaret.
If Elizabeth had a living daughter, the distribution might have been different depending on the trust terms.
Daniel stared at me.
"Mom inherited because everyone thought you didn't exist."
I felt sick.
Susan reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
"Did you get paid to take me?"
Her face collapsed.
"No."
"Then why?"
"Elizabeth asked me."
My anger faltered.
Susan had remained in contact with Elizabeth after leaving the clinic.
Elizabeth became pregnant under circumstances Susan refused to explain without evidence.
She feared Samuel Whitmore.
She arranged for Susan and her husband to raise me.
My adoptive father died when I was twelve.
He had known everything.
Another person I could never question.
"What does Case 88-206 have to do with Emma?"
Susan didn't know.
But the lab did.
Their compliance officer called that afternoon.
The automatic match had produced two archived links.
88-417.
Peter's file.
And 88-206.
Elizabeth's.
Emma's DNA had independently confirmed biological connections through both her paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother.
That was why the archive surfaced.
The lab could now seek court authorization to identify the old donor records formally.
Margaret hadn't chained Emma because she believed Emma wasn't family.
She chained her after Emma pulled the documents from Margaret's purse.
She was trying to recover evidence that could prove Emma belonged to the Whitmore bloodline twice over—through me, and through Margaret's hidden family history.
Then Daniel found something in Henry's old estate papers.
Elizabeth Whitmore hadn't died when Margaret said she did.
She lived until 2004.
