Chapter 1 - The Voice Behind the Door

“She has no idea.”

Margot Stephens froze barefoot in the hallway at exactly 2:03 A.M.

Her husband stood inside the dark study, smiling at his phone as if he were discussing a vacation—not dismantling his wife’s life.

“What if she reads the documents?” a man asked through the speaker.

Lucas gave a quiet laugh.

“Margot always signs what I give her.”

Her knees nearly folded.

Margot pressed one palm against the wall and covered her mouth with the other, trapping the breath trying to escape.

For forty-one years, she had trusted that voice.

It had promised fidelity at an altar.

It had comforted her through her mother’s funeral.

It had told her every investment, contract, and tax document was being handled “for their future.”

Now it sounded amused by her obedience.

Lucas suddenly turned toward the hallway.

Margot pulled back behind the wall.

His footsteps approached.

She barely reached the bedroom before he appeared in the doorway.

“You awake?” he asked.

Margot forced her breathing to remain slow.

“Bad dream.”

Lucas studied her for a long moment.

Then he smiled.

“Go back to sleep.”

He kissed her forehead and returned to the study.

Margot waited until the door clicked shut.

Then she opened her eyes.
