Chapter 10 - The Signing

Lucas placed the agreement on the dining table.
“It’s a routine asset-protection document.”
Margot looked at the yellow tab.
The same blank signature line she had found in the metal box.
“I’d like my attorney to review it.”
“You don’t have an attorney.”
“Then I’ll hire one.”
Lucas’s smile disappeared.
“This family doesn’t need strangers interfering.”
The doorbell rang.
Elliot Vale entered with a traveling notary named Sandra Keene.
Elliot greeted Margot warmly, as though he had not helped forge her financial life.
Sandra opened her journal.
Lucas placed a pen in Margot’s hand.
“Sign.”
Margot let her fingers tremble.
“I’m confused.”
Lucas immediately softened his voice.
“See? This is what I’ve been worried about.”
Elliot leaned closer.
“It’s simply paperwork confirming the arrangement you already approved.”
Margot stared at him.
“Which arrangement?”
He glanced at Lucas.
That single guilty movement was captured by the camera Claire had remotely activated inside a framed photograph.
Margot lowered the pen.
“I need my glasses.”
Lucas blocked her path.
“They’re right here.”
He pulled a pair from his pocket.
They were not hers.
The lenses blurred the text.
Margot understood the cruelty of the detail.
They did not merely expect her signature.
They intended to make sure she could not read what she signed.
She pushed the glasses aside.
“No.”

Lucas’s face hardened.
👉 Then someone knocked again—and Lucas went pale when Margot said, “That will be my witness.”
