Chapter 8 - The Prescription

The label read: Clonazepam.

Take nightly for anxiety and confusion.

The bottle was half empty.

Margot had never swallowed a single pill.

She photographed the label and called the pharmacy from the locked bathroom.

The pharmacist confirmed that Lucas had collected the prescription twice.

“Who prescribed it?”

“Dr. Nathan Rowe.”

Margot searched the name.

Nathan Rowe specialized in geriatric cognitive disorders.

His office notes could be used to suggest diminished capacity.

The revised will suddenly made sense.

If Lucas convinced others she was mentally impaired, he could claim she had authorized changes before her “decline.”

Then any objection she made afterward could be dismissed as confusion.

Margot placed the bottle exactly where she found it.

At dinner, Lucas poured wine and watched her carefully.

“You seem tense.”

“I’m tired.”

“You should take your medication.”

Margot set down her fork.

“What medication?”

His eyes sharpened.

Then he smiled.

“The vitamins beside the sink.”

She held his gaze for one beat too long.

Lucas’s hand tightened around his wineglass.

Later, Margot pretended to sleep.

Lucas entered the bedroom and stood over her.

She kept her breathing slow.

He lifted her phone from the nightstand and carried it into the hallway.

Margot waited until he left.

Then she reached beneath the mattress and removed the inexpensive second phone she had purchased with cash.

The recording app was still running.

Lucas’s footsteps stopped outside the bedroom.

👉 Through the thin door, Margot heard him tell Elliot, “She’s starting to remember things.”
