Chapter 1 - Why Are You Scared?

The coffee left Linda Bennett’s mug in one violent arc.
Claire had barely registered Ellie’s little hand reaching toward the bright plastic cup on the kitchen floor when Linda surged forward.
“KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF HIS THINGS!”
The mug snapped through the air.
Coffee splashed across Ellie’s pale pink shirt and shoulder.
The two-year-old recoiled with a scream so sharp that every sound in the kitchen seemed to stop around it.
“Ellie!”
Claire moved before thought could catch up.
She scooped her daughter from the floor and crushed her protectively against her chest.
Ellie wailed, confused and frightened, tiny fingers gripping Claire’s blouse.
Linda stepped toward them.
Claire saw her hand reaching.
“DON’T TOUCH HER!”
She struck Linda’s hand away and shoved her back.
Hard.
Linda stumbled against one of the dining chairs.
Gary Bennett sprang halfway from his seat.
“What the hell?”
Ben came rushing from the kitchen doorway.
Claire expected him to move toward Ellie.
Expected him to ask whether she was all right.
Expected him to look at the coffee dripping from his daughter’s shirt.
Instead, he grabbed Claire’s arm.
“Stop attacking my mother!”
Claire stared at him.
For one stunned second, even Ellie’s crying seemed distant.
“What?”
Ben tightened his hand around her sleeve.
Claire ripped herself free.
Then something caught her eye.
A smartphone.
It was propped against the ceramic fruit bowl on the kitchen counter.
Camera facing the room.
Facing Linda.
Facing Ellie.
Facing the exact place where everything had happened.
Claire stopped moving.
She looked at the phone.
Then at Linda.
Linda followed her gaze.
And changed.
The fury vanished from her face.
Completely.
Not slowly.
Not gradually.
It disappeared in an instant.
Fear replaced it.
Claire felt something cold move through her.
Linda lunged for the counter.
Claire moved faster.
Still holding Ellie securely against her with one arm, she grabbed the phone with the other.
Linda reached.
Claire knocked her arm aside.
“GIVE ME THAT PHONE!”
The panic in Linda’s voice silenced the room.
Claire stepped backward.
Ellie buried her wet face against her mother’s neck.
Claire did not look at the phone screen.
Not yet.
She looked at Linda.
“Why are you scared?”
Linda’s face drained of color.
Ben finally noticed.
His eyes moved from his mother to the phone in Claire’s hand.
Then back again.
“Mom?”
Linda said nothing.
And that silence told Claire more than any answer could have.

Because this was not the first time Linda Bennett had claimed Claire misunderstood what she saw.
It was simply the first time there might be proof.
