Chapter 9 - The Lie Before the Lie

Margaret had not seen Gary in thirty-four years.

That was the first truth.

The second was worse.

She was not only Gary’s sister.

For a brief period after Daniel was removed from Linda and Gary’s custody, Margaret had been his court-approved foster guardian.

Not Robert.

Not entirely.

Gary had lied.

Again.

“Why?” Ben demanded.

Everyone remained behind the locked door.

Margaret and Linda stood outside.

Gary looked exhausted.

“Because Margaret became obsessed with Daniel.”

Linda laughed bitterly from the speaker.

“Finally.”

Gary ignored her.

“Margaret couldn't have children.”

Claire immediately disliked where this was going.

“She cared for Daniel during those six weeks.”

Daniel sat perfectly still.

“How old was I?”

“Two.”

“So I remember none of this.”

“No.”

“What happened?”

Gary looked at his son.

“She tried to keep you.”

Silence.

“She filed a petition alleging Linda and I were unfit.”

Daniel whispered, “Were you?”

Gary flinched.

“At that time, your mother was unstable. I was weak.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“Yes,” Gary said.

Daniel looked away.

Gary continued.

“But Margaret didn't simply want you safe.”

“She wanted him,” Linda said.

Her voice came through the speaker.

“Like property.”

Claire looked toward the monitor.

Linda stood outside the house.

The accusation sounded strange coming from her.

Gary said, “The court eventually returned Daniel to us.”

“And Margaret?”

“We cut contact.”

“For thirty-four years?”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at Margaret on the monitor.

“Why come back now?”

Gary closed his eyes.

“Because Ethan was born.”

Daniel stood.

“She knew about my son?”

“Family social media. Mutual friends.”

“She contacted you?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Four years ago.”

Daniel looked ready to explode.

“You never told me?”

“I thought I could manage it.”

Claire nearly laughed.

That sentence summarized the entire family.

Everyone managing secrets.

Everyone deciding which truth another person could handle.

“What did Margaret want?” Claire asked.

Gary looked at Ellie’s baby monitor.

“To meet Ethan.”

“And?”

“I refused.”

Linda spoke through the intercom.

“So she changed targets.”

Claire felt her body tense.

“Ellie.”

No one answered.

Margaret stepped closer to the door.

“I can hear you discussing me.”

Her voice was calm.

Almost pleasant.

“You always did prefer whispers, Gary.”

Linda turned.

“Leave.”

Margaret ignored her.

“Claire?”

Claire froze.

Margaret knew her name.

“I only want to talk.”

Ben pressed the speaker.

“You need to leave our property.”

Margaret smiled.

“You must be Ben.”

“Leave.”

“You sound like your father.”

Linda stepped between Margaret and the camera again.

“I said go.”

Margaret looked at her.

“And if I don't?”

For the first time, Linda’s voice shook.

“I'll tell them.”

Margaret stopped smiling.

Gary whispered, “Tell us what?”

Linda closed her eyes.

Claire felt it.

The next secret.

The one underneath all the others.

Linda opened her eyes.

“You want to know why I knew Robert was in the house today?”

No one spoke.

“Because he called me this morning.”

Daniel moved toward the intercom.

“Why?”

“He said Margaret had found Ellie.”

Claire’s arms tightened around her daughter.

Ben whispered, “Found?”

Linda looked directly into the camera.

“She has been following Claire for months.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“That is absurd.”

Linda ignored her.

“She knew Ellie’s daycare.”

Claire’s stomach turned.

“She knew the park you use.”

Ben swore.

“She knew Sunday lunches happen here.”

Claire remembered unfamiliar cars.

A woman once smiling at Ellie outside a grocery store.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing memorable.

Until now.

Linda continued.

“So Robert came here because he believed Margaret might come.”

Claire struggled to understand.

“And you threw coffee?”

Linda’s face crumpled.

“I needed you to leave immediately.”

“You could have told me.”

“And would you have believed me?”

Claire said nothing.

Linda laughed through tears.

“No. Because I spent two years making sure you wouldn't.”

That answer hurt because it was true.

Linda had destroyed her own credibility long before she needed it.

Claire looked at Margaret.

“Why Ellie?”

Margaret smiled.

There was no warmth in it.

“Because everyone keeps pretending she belongs to you.”

Ben stepped forward.

“She is our daughter.”

Margaret tilted her head.

“Is she?”

The room became silent.

Claire felt the world narrow.

Ben stared at the monitor.

“What did you say?”

Margaret reached into her coat.

Linda reacted instantly.

“Don't.”

Margaret removed an envelope.

Not a weapon.

Just paper.

She held it toward the camera.

“I think Claire deserves to know why Linda never accepted that child.”

Claire looked at Linda.

Linda’s face showed pure terror.

Margaret smiled.
