Chapter 3 - Show Me What Happened

“Claire.”
Ben’s voice followed her down the hallway.
She did not stop.
Ellie was still crying.
Claire had removed the damp pink shirt as quickly as possible and wrapped her daughter in a soft kitchen towel while Gary called urgent care.
Claire’s hands shook so badly she could barely fasten Ellie’s replacement shirt.
“Claire, wait.”
She turned.
Ben stopped in the doorway.
His face looked gray.
“What?”
“I’m coming with you.”
“To urgent care?”
“Of course.”
Claire stared at him.
Twenty minutes ago, she would not have questioned that sentence.
Now she did.
“Why did you grab me?”
Ben frowned.
“What?”
“When your mother had just thrown coffee at our daughter.”
“I didn’t see what happened.”
“You saw Ellie screaming.”
“I walked in when you pushed Mom.”
Claire laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“So you assumed I was attacking her?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You literally said, ‘Stop attacking my mother.’”
Ben rubbed his forehead.
“I was reacting.”
“So was I.”
Ellie whimpered against Claire’s shoulder.
Instantly Claire softened.
“It’s okay, baby.”
Gary appeared behind Ben.
“The clinic says they can take her immediately.”
Claire nodded.
Gary looked at the phone in her hand.
“You should bring that too.”
Ben turned toward his father.
“What?”
Gary’s expression was unreadable.
“If it recorded the kitchen, you should preserve whatever is on it.”
From the dining room came Linda’s voice.
“It didn’t record anything.”
Everyone froze.
Linda appeared at the end of the hallway.
Her earlier panic was gone.
The mask had returned.
Her shoulders were straight.
Her voice controlled.
“How would you know?” Claire asked.
Linda hesitated.
“It was facing the fruit bowl.”
“No.”
Claire’s voice was very quiet.
“It was facing Ellie.”
Linda folded her arms.
“You’re upset.”
“My daughter was screaming because of you.”
“It was an accident.”
Claire stared.
Behind her, Ben inhaled sharply.
An accident.
That was new.
Only minutes earlier, Linda had been yelling at Ellie.
Now it was an accident.
Claire raised the phone.
“Then you won’t care if I watch this.”
Linda stepped forward.
Gary immediately moved between them.
“Linda.”
“Give her the phone.”
Gary looked at his wife.
“No.”
Something passed between them.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Claire saw it.
And suddenly she wondered how many times Gary had seen this version of Linda before.
Linda looked at Ben.
“Tell your wife to stop this.”
Ben did not respond.
“Ben.”
He looked at his mother.
“Did you throw it?”
Linda’s eyes widened.
“I already said it was an accident.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Claire had never heard him speak to Linda that way.
The first crack.
Small.
But real.
Linda pointed toward Claire.
“She shoved me.”
“After Ellie screamed,” Gary said.
Linda turned on him.
“You stay out of this.”
“It’s my house.”
“It’s our house.”
“And that is our granddaughter.”
Linda’s mouth closed.
Nobody spoke.
Finally Claire said, “I’m taking Ellie.”
She headed for the door.
Ben followed.
Then Claire stopped.
Turned.
And looked directly at Linda.

“I’m not deleting anything.”
For the second time that afternoon, fear flashed across Linda Bennett’s face.
