Chapter 6 - The Folder Named FAMILY

By morning, Daniel was sitting at Claire and Ben’s dining table.

He looked terrible.

Gary sat beside him.

Neither Linda nor Ethan was there.

Daniel’s wife, Rachel, had taken Ethan to her parents.

Daniel opened his laptop.

“I had old phone backups stored under the same account.”

Claire sat across from him.

“And?”

“There’s a folder.”

He turned the screen around.

FAMILY.

Thousands of files.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Videos.

Most were ordinary.

Birthday parties.

Christmas mornings.

Barbecues.

School events.

Then Daniel showed them a second folder.

PRIVATE.

Inside were recordings no one remembered consenting to.

Conversations between Ben and Claire.

Daniel arguing with Rachel.

Gary speaking with an attorney.

Claire discussing Ellie’s daycare.

Ben talking about moving to another state.

Gary looked sick.

“She recorded us?”

Daniel nodded.

“For years.”

Ben stared at his father.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“Dad.”

“I knew she saved messages. I didn't know this.”

Daniel opened an audio file.

Linda’s voice.

“Claire is trying to take Ben away from us.”

Another.

“If they move, I’ll barely see Ellie.”

Another.

“Rachel puts ideas in Daniel’s head.”

Another.

“Gary thinks I don't understand what he’s doing.”

Claire looked toward Gary.

“What were you doing?”

Gary did not answer.

“Gary?”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“I was preparing to leave.”

Everyone fell silent.

Ben stared.

“Leave Mom?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“What happened?”

“I changed my mind.”

Daniel gave a hollow laugh.

“No. She found out.”

Gary looked at him.

“How do you know?”

Daniel clicked another audio file.

Linda speaking on the phone.

“If Gary walks out, I will make sure his sons understand exactly who destroyed this family.”

Gary closed his eyes.

Claire felt pieces moving into place.

Linda did not simply dislike losing control.

She feared it.

People leaving.

People choosing someone else.

Children touching objects she had mentally assigned to another child.

Everything became possession.

Daniel opened another recording.

This one was recent.

Linda speaking to an unknown woman.

“I know Claire thinks Ellie belongs to her.”

Claire’s blood ran cold.

Ben stood.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“But that little girl is a Bennett.”

A woman responded.

“We've discussed boundaries, Linda.”

“I don't need a lecture.”

“You called me.”

“I called because Claire is becoming a problem.”

Ben stopped breathing.

Daniel paused the recording.

“Who is that?”

Gary knew.

Claire saw it immediately.

“Gary?”

He looked ashamed.

“Dr. Elaine Parker.”

“Who?”

“Linda’s former therapist.”

Ben stared.

“Former?”

“Very former.”

“How former?”

“Almost thirty years.”

Claire frowned.

“Why would Linda call a therapist from thirty years ago?”

Gary looked at Daniel.

Then at Ben.

“Because Dr. Parker knows what happened when Daniel was two.”

Daniel went still.

“What happened to me?”

Gary did not answer.

“Dad.”

His voice broke.

“What happened?”

Gary stared down at his hands.

“Your mother left you in the car.”

Silence.

Daniel blinked.

“What?”

“It was winter.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Gary continued.

“She went inside a store. She said it would be five minutes.”

“How long?”

“Almost an hour.”

Daniel stared at him.

“You told us there was an accident.”

“There was.”

“That wasn't an accident.”

Gary’s voice cracked.

“I know.”

Ben whispered, “Why did nobody tell us?”

“Because Linda nearly broke afterward.”

Gary looked at Daniel.

“She became convinced someone would take you from her.”

Daniel leaned back.

“Because she endangered me.”

“Yes.”

Claire thought of Ethan.

Daniel’s son.

Linda’s obsessive protection.

Suddenly it made terrible sense.

She had almost lost Daniel.

Decades later, she had turned Daniel’s child into something sacred.

Something nobody else was allowed to touch.

Not even Ellie.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then his laptop chimed.

A restored file had appeared.

Three seconds.

Recovered from temporary cloud cache.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel clicked.

The kitchen appeared.

Ellie reached toward Ethan’s cup.

Linda stepped forward.

The missing moment began.

And all four adults watched.

When it ended, Ben pushed his chair backward.

His face had gone white.

“No.”

Claire stared at the screen.

Gary whispered, “My God.”

There was no ambiguity anymore.

No camera glitch.

No misunderstanding.

No accident.

And yet something else in the recording frightened Claire almost as much as Linda’s action.

May you like

Because just before Linda moved toward Ellie, she looked directly at the camera.

As if she already knew it was there.
