Chapter 4 - THE SECOND NEWBORN

The nursery contained another male infant born three hours earlier under the name Baby Vale.
His mother had disappeared from the maternity floor.
Hospital records identified her as Caroline Vale, daughter of Dr. Samuel Vale.
The second baby carried the same crescent birthmark.
Independent DNA testing showed both newborns were related to William Carter.
Twins.
Created from the same embryo, divided in a Vale laboratory, and implanted into two different women.
I carried one.
Caroline carried the other.
Thomas intended to compare which infant developed the rare trait more strongly.
One child would become heir.
The other would become donor.
Caroline had learned the truth before delivery and tried to escape. Security footage showed her entering the old surgical passage moments after my son’s birth.
The urgent knocking outside the delivery room had not only come from Thomas.
Caroline had been in the hallway too.
She disappeared during the blackout.
Her infant remained.
No court could decide identity quickly because the bracelets had been switched.
Which baby came from my body?
I knew the feel of my child against me, the way he turned toward my voice—but instinct was not evidence.
Dr. Carter remembered clipping a tiny blue cord near the blanket after my son’s delivery.
The baby in my arms had the cord.
That helped.
Then Nurse Rachel found the original delivery instrument tray.
A drop of blood beneath the cord clamp matched the baby I held.
He was mine.
The second infant belonged to Caroline.
Both remained under independent medical protection.
Thomas’s plan collapsed.
But Caroline was missing.
Rebecca traced her through security cameras to the riverfront parking garage. She entered a black SUV driven by Dr. Vale.
Voluntarily or under threat, we could not tell.
Daniel offered to help locate them.
I did not trust him.
But he knew Thomas’s properties and the codes used by the family.
We worked through federal agents, not private promises.
The search led to an abandoned pediatric clinic outside Omaha.
Caroline was found in a locked examination room.
Dr. Vale had already fled.
She was weak, bleeding, and terrified the hospital would take her son.
Rebecca told her the infant remained protected and no family member controlled custody.
Caroline cried from relief.
Then she asked one question.
“Which baby did Thomas call William?”
The files assigned names before birth.
My son: William Carter II.
Her son: Daniel Carter II.
The program intended to replace both men through infants.
Thomas believed names were positions.
William the legitimate heir.
Daniel the controlled son.
Each generation repeated through children.
I named my baby Noah Sutton.
Caroline named hers Luke Vale.
We refused the assigned names.
That act seemed small.
Thomas treated it as war.
He released my private medical history to the media and claimed I stole Caroline’s child.
Edited footage showed Dr. Carter handing me a baby while Caroline cried in the corridor.
The public story spread before evidence.
Reporters surrounded the hospital.
Daniel’s old disappearance became national news.
Eleanor’s survival became scandal.
Malcolm suspended the federal injunction through an emergency appellate order.
The custody fight reopened.
Then my attorney discovered the appellate judge was not a Carter relative.
He was my father.
My father, Robert Sutton, had abandoned my mother before I was born.
May you like
He was alive.
And he had signed the order transferring Noah to the Carter Trust.
