Chapter 6 - THE THIRD BROTHER

Daniel did not take Noah.
He worked with federal agents to arrange a controlled meeting without the baby.
Dr. Vale arrived at an abandoned church carrying a medical case and no visible weapon.
He looked at Daniel as if studying his own reflection.
The brothers shared the same eyes.
Samuel confessed that he learned his identity only one year earlier. Thomas told him William and Eleanor willingly gave him away because he was medically defective.
Thomas trained him to become the doctor who “corrected” the family line.
Samuel believed implanting the twin embryos would prove his value.
He knew the procedures lacked consent.
He called them necessary.
Daniel asked why he altered my pregnancy.
Samuel answered, “Because Father said your child would die.”
Another lie dressed as rescue.
Samuel surrendered the medical case.
Inside were original embryo records, consent videos, and genetic profiles.
He also carried the remote code for Daniel’s chest implant.
Thomas had threatened to deactivate the device if Samuel defected.
Dr. Carter’s cardiac team removed the implant safely.
Inside was no life-support function.
Only tracking and intermittent electrical stimulation capable of creating chest pain.
Thomas had manufactured Daniel’s belief that he would die without the family.
Daniel spent twenty-nine years obeying a device that was never keeping him alive.
That truth broke him more than prison might have.
Samuel entered custody and began cooperating.
His files identified twelve active pregnancies created without full consent.
Federal raids protected the carriers.
Some chose to continue.
Some did not.
Each received independent medical and legal support.
The Carter program began collapsing nationally.
Thomas disappeared.
Malcolm resigned from the bench but denied criminal involvement. Evidence showed he signed custody orders while believing he protected medically vulnerable infants.
Like Robert Sutton, he had chosen not to look deeper.
The law would decide degrees.
Then Eleanor asked to see all three sons together.
Daniel agreed.
Samuel agreed through custody glass.
Malcolm refused at first.
When he finally entered, no one embraced.
William stood on one side.
Eleanor on the other.
Three adult men faced the parents whose family had been divided by Thomas.
Malcolm said, “You wanted Daniel.”
William answered, “I wanted my child back. I did not know another child was placed in his absence.”
“You loved a ghost more than me.”
“I let grief make you feel replaceable.”
That admission mattered.
It did not repair decades.
Samuel said nothing.
Daniel looked toward me through the observation window.
I held Noah.
The future no longer belonged to the men in that room alone.
Then Caroline arrived with Luke.
She had found another file in Samuel’s case.
A fourth Carter son existed.
Born the same year as Malcolm.
Raised under the name Thomas Carter Jr.
He was now director of hospital security.
The man outside my delivery room who shouted “Doctor Carter” had not been Thomas Senior.
It had been his hidden son.
Another Thomas.
May you like
The elder founder might already be dead.
Or someone had been using his identity for years.
