Chapter 9 - MY MOTHER’S CONSENT

Diane Sutton lived under the name Diana Vale in a Carter long-term care home.

She had entered the program after my father abandoned us and medical bills destroyed our finances.

Thomas offered treatment for her cancer in exchange for administrative work.

She began by processing records.

Later, she recruited patients.

Then she discovered my fertility profile matched the Carter project.

She authorized monitoring.

When the embryo switch occurred, Diane believed the original fetus had a fatal condition.

Samuel told her replacing it would save me from grief.

She signed.

She also approved medication that erased my memory of the procedure.

My mother thought she was protecting me from losing a child.

She never verified the diagnosis.

The original fetus had been healthy.

It had been transferred to another carrier.

My first son was alive somewhere.

Noah was not the first baby created from my pregnancy.

The procedure removed my biological fetus, implanted the Carter embryo temporarily, and later restored another embryo related to Daniel. The records were intentionally confusing.

Independent experts reconstructed the timeline.

At twenty weeks, my original fetus was surgically transferred into an artificial gestational chamber at a Vale laboratory.

Noah was implanted afterward.

I had carried two different babies during one pregnancy.

The medical horror was almost impossible to understand.

Diane began crying.

“I thought they saved both.”

“Where is the first?”

She did not know.

Thomas Jr. held the chamber records.

The fetus would now be a newborn, delivered days before Noah.

The project called him Patient A.

No name.

No mother.

Rebecca traced equipment shipments to a private research facility near Lincoln.

Federal agents entered.

The artificial chamber was empty.

A newborn medical crib remained warm.

Security footage showed Thomas Jr. carrying the infant out twelve hours earlier.

He now held my first son.

He sent a video.

The baby slept inside a black carrier.

Thomas Jr. said, “One child belongs to birth. One belongs to design.”

I answered, “Both are people.”

He smiled.

“Then choose which one leaves with you.”

He demanded Samuel’s archive in exchange for one baby.

He would keep the other as heir.

I refused the premise.

Federal agents traced a church bell in the background.

The same abandoned church where Samuel surrendered.

Thomas Jr. had returned to the family’s first secret nursery beneath it.

Daniel knew a tunnel entrance.

He volunteered to guide agents.

I allowed no unsupervised role.

The operation entered through three routes.

Thomas Jr. stood inside the nursery holding the infant.

No weapon visible.

He had placed explosives around the archive cabinets.

He threatened evidence, not the child.

The program’s files could expose hundreds more cases.

He wanted us to choose between saving records and pursuing him.

Agents prioritized the baby.

Thomas escaped.

The archive burned partly, but digital backups survived.

My first son was recovered.

DNA confirmed he was mine.

His father was unknown.

The donor file had been removed.

I named him Eli Sutton.

Now I had two newborn sons.

One carried by me from conception to transfer.

One delivered from my body after another implantation.

Both surrounded by adults who wanted definitions before relationships.

I requested independent guardianship for Eli while I recovered and learned his medical needs.

I did not pretend biology made me instantly capable of parenting two infants after trauma.

That decision was attacked publicly as abandonment.

Thomas Jr. released edited footage of me declining immediate custody.

The same old weapon.

A mother who asks for support becomes unfit.
