The Four Women He Never Saved / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - THE TRIAL

Diane’s federal trial began four months later.

My bruises had faded.

The scar across my lips remained.

I did not cover it.

The prosecution built the case through photographs, videos, financial records, forged psychiatric reports, and testimony from survivors.

Anna testified first.

She described losing her identity, children, and decades of freedom.

Eleanor testified about the false death and confinement.

Rachel testified against Dr. Vale and admitted helping Diane without knowing her own history.

Dr. Brooks admitted falsifying Anna’s evaluation and explained how Diane’s network manipulated hospitals.

Mark testified under a plea agreement.

He admitted surveillance, fraud, restraint, and delivering the pills that killed Richard.

He claimed he had spent his life under Diane’s control.

The prosecutor asked whether control prevented him from opening his hands while Diane stitched my mouth.

He could not answer.

I testified last.

Diane stared at the scar she created.

I described the needle.

The thread.

Mark’s hands.

The four photographs.

The hidden basement.

But I also described smaller things.

The canceled calls.

The rewritten memories.

The medical forms I never signed.

The way Diane taught everyone to question women before questioning her.

Her attorney asked why I remained married to Mark if the abuse was real.

I looked directly at the jury.

“Because leaving requires knowing the door exists.”

The courtroom went silent.

The jury found Diane guilty of kidnapping, assault, guardianship fraud, trafficking, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and murder.

Dr. Vale accepted a lengthy sentence.

Judge Hale was convicted.

Mark pleaded guilty.

The network’s accounts were frozen.

The trust was returned to Anna’s children.

Justice arrived.

But it did not repair everything.

Rachel still called Vale her father sometimes.

Anna still woke believing she was locked inside the clinic.

Eleanor could not tolerate tape near her mouth.

I could not enter a kitchen with black thread.

Healing was not a verdict.

It was work.

Then Rebecca received a sealed file from Richard’s estate.

The document showed Diane was not the network’s founder.

She had inherited it from someone else.

A woman named Margaret Brooks.

Dr. Ethan Brooks’s mother.
