Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN ABOVE DIANE
Margaret Brooks had recruited Diane when both women worked at a private maternity hospital.
She taught Diane how to alter birth records, create psychiatric histories, and move children through sealed adoptions.
Dr. Brooks claimed his mother died twenty years earlier.
No death certificate existed.
He had believed Diane when she told him Margaret was gone.
The pattern repeated even among the people who thought they escaped it.
Rebecca traced Margaret to a retirement community under a false name.
Federal agents found her room empty.
Inside were recent photographs of me, Anna, Rachel, and my pregnancy.
Margaret had watched the trial.
She had also transferred money from an offshore account hours before Diane’s conviction.
The account held funds from hundreds of guardianship cases.
The network extended beyond one family.
Diane had been a manager.
Margaret was an architect.
Dr. Brooks blamed himself.
I did not comfort him.
Guilt could become useful only when turned into action.
He gave investigators access to old family storage.
They found original hospital logs dating back forty years.
The logs identified mothers, children, adoptive families, and buyers.
Some adoptions had been wanted and lawful.
Others began with drugs, threats, and stolen signatures.
Federal teams started locating survivors.
My pregnancy progressed normally.
I decided to continue it.
Not because of Mark.
Because the child had done nothing wrong.
I named her Grace in my private thoughts, though I told no one yet.
Anna moved into a small apartment near me.
Rachel visited once a week.
Sometimes we sat together without speaking.
That was enough.
Then Mark sent me a letter from prison.
He apologized without asking forgiveness.
At the bottom, he wrote:
My mother was afraid of Margaret, but Margaret was afraid of your father.
Anna read the sentence.
Her face changed.
“My father?”
She had always believed her father died before I was born.
He created the twelve-million-dollar trust.
He may also have financed the original network.
Rebecca searched his records.
His name was Senator William Grant.
He had not died.
He had become a federal judge under a new identity.
The judge assigned to Diane’s appeal was William Hale.
He was Anna’s father.
