Chapter 8 - THE GUARDIANSHIP HEARING

Diane appeared in court wearing a gray dress and a grieving expression.
She claimed Mark had been manipulated by me and Anna.
She described herself as a mother trying to save an unstable daughter-in-law.
Her attorney presented medical records signed by Dr. Vale.
The records said I hallucinated abuse.
They said I injured myself.
They said I became obsessed with a conspiracy involving dead women.
Then Rebecca displayed the photographs from Diane’s purse.
The curved needles.
The black thread.
The basement room.
The hidden videos.
Diane’s attorney called the evidence misunderstood family history.
The judge, Thomas Hale, seemed eager to agree.
Anna recognized him.
He had signed the order declaring her dead.
Rebecca requested his recusal.
He refused.
Mark entered in jail clothing as a witness.
For the first time, he told the full truth.
He admitted researching me.
He admitted monitoring me.
He admitted seeing the guardianship agreement.
He admitted holding me while Diane stitched my mouth.
The courtroom went silent.
“Why?” Rebecca asked.
Mark looked at me.
“Because my mother said Claire would leave if she could speak.”
Diane closed her eyes.
The judge ordered a recess.
Before leaving the bench, he whispered something to the bailiff.
Ortiz noticed.
She followed them.
Minutes later, federal agents entered.
Judge Hale was arrested for accepting payments from Diane.
The guardianship petition collapsed.
But Eleanor remained missing.
Then every phone in the courtroom received a video.
Eleanor sat tied to a chair.
Diane stood behind her.
The woman at the defense table was not Diane.
She was Diane’s younger sister, Margaret, disguised in her clothes.
The real Diane smiled into the camera.
“Claire,” she said, “your mother survived because I allowed it.”
May you like
She placed a needle against Eleanor’s lip.
“Let’s see whether her daughter makes the same choice.”
