Chapter 7 - THE FIRE

The fire began in the hospital records room.
It destroyed files connected to my toxicology results and Dr. Vale’s prescriptions.
But the sprinkler system contained the flames before they reached our room.
Diane escaped.
A security camera showed her entering in a nurse’s coat.
The footage also showed Mark speaking to her thirty minutes earlier.
He claimed she called him from the hallway and threatened Anna.
The audio was missing.
Anna did not believe him.
Neither did I.
Detective Ortiz placed Mark under arrest for conspiracy and evidence tampering.
He did not resist.
As officers led him away, he said, “Claire, there’s something inside our wedding video.”
At home, Daniel found the recording.
During the reception, Diane gave a speech about family loyalty.
Behind her, reflected in a mirror, Dr. Vale handed Mark a sealed envelope.
Mark opened it later in a private hallway.
The camera captured one page.
Guardianship Contingency Agreement.
Mark had seen the plan on our wedding day.
He had six years to tell me.
He chose silence.
Federal prosecutors joined the investigation.
Attorney Rebecca Sloan represented Anna and me.
She uncovered guardianship cases connected to Diane across three states.
Women lost property, children, and legal identities after relatives claimed they were mentally ill.
The same doctors, judges, and social workers appeared repeatedly.
Diane was not merely protecting one family.
She ran a business.
Eleanor contacted Ortiz from a secure location.
She had stolen Diane’s client ledger.
Before she could deliver it, someone found her.
The call ended with glass breaking.
Police traced the signal to a motel.
The room was empty.
Blood marked the bathroom floor.
A message had been written on the mirror.
BRING CLAIRE TO THE COURTHOUSE.
Beneath it was a time.
