Chapter 10 - THE UNKNOWN FATHER
Rachel decrypted the donor file.
The biological father of my unborn daughter was Ranger Caleb Morris.
He denied knowing anything.
A DNA test confirmed the match.
Years earlier, Morris donated genetic material while undergoing fertility treatment with his former wife.
Genesis acquired it through a shell laboratory.
Walter selected him because Morris carried a compatible mutation and held law-enforcement access.
The pairing was strategic.
A child biologically connected to a Texas Ranger could create leverage if investigations began.
Morris looked devastated.
“I never consented to this.”
Neither had I.
The child inside me had been created from two stolen choices.
But she was not a crime.
She was a person.
Morris offered to step away from the investigation.
Rebecca refused.
His personal connection had to be disclosed, but his work remained essential.
Michael reacted violently when he learned.
Even from custody, he called the baby his.
I ended the call.
“You threatened her before she was born.”
“I thought she was mine.”
“That made it worse, not better.”
He punched the jail wall.
The man who claimed conditioning still reached for violence when control slipped away.
Walter contacted Morris directly.
He offered the location of a missing Bluebonnet child in exchange for me.
Morris pretended to negotiate while federal agents traced the call.
The signal came from the Carter farmhouse.
Again.
Agents returned.
Inside the living room, the wooden pillar had been removed.
Beneath it was a steel hatch.
The underground complex extended far beyond the house.
Walter had operated beneath us the entire time.
They found Anna’s old confinement room.
Grace’s nursery.
The medical suite where my first daughter was born.
And a courtroom.
Rows of chairs faced a judge’s bench.
Walter had staged private legal hearings underground, using corrupt officials to sign away mothers and children.
On the bench sat Jonathan Hale.
The Genesis CEO.
He had not been Walter’s partner.
