Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE

Michael claimed the signature was forged.

Margaret said he signed while drunk.

I remembered the night.

Six months earlier, she hosted dinner at our house. Michael drank heavily. Margaret placed several documents in front of him and called them property-tax forms.

He signed without reading.

She had planned the transfer before the ultrasound.

The baby’s sex had never been the real issue.

Margaret intended to sell my child either way.

The grandson obsession was a method of control.

A story that justified cruelty.

Ranger Morris found messages between Margaret and an attorney named Samuel Vale.

The texts discussed my pregnancy, delivery date, and the amount buyers were willing to pay for a “healthy Carter-line infant.”

The phrase Carter-line appeared repeatedly.

Anna reacted when she saw it.

Margaret’s operation did not sell random babies.

It selected children from specific bloodlines.

She believed the Carter family carried a valuable genetic trait.

Walter had financed secret medical testing decades earlier.

Anna had been one of the subjects.

So had I.

My childhood medical records contained unexplained blood draws and tissue samples.

Margaret had followed my life even after selling me.

She arranged my meeting with Michael.

The charity event where we met had been funded by Samuel Vale.

Our marriage was not chance.

Margaret paired two people born through her farmhouse network to produce another child.

The baby inside me had been designed long before I knew Michael’s name.

Doctors at the hospital ran genetic tests.

The results showed Michael and I were not biologically related.

But both of us carried a rare mutation associated with rapid cellular repair.

A private biotechnology firm had offered money for newborn tissue and long-term medical rights.

The buyer did not want to adopt my daughter.

They wanted access to her body.

Michael sat in custody, pale and shaking.

“You told me she was worthless,” he said to Margaret.

“She was worthless as family,” Margaret replied. “Not as material.”

Even Ranger Morris looked sick.

Then investigators opened the medicine bottle Margaret planned to use on me.

It contained a drug that could trigger premature labor.

The plan had been to force delivery at the farmhouse before anyone reached us.

A hidden medical room was found beneath the barn.

Inside were surgical tools, an infant incubator, and a refrigerated transport case.

The case was empty.

A label on its lid read:

CARTER SUBJECT 7.

My daughter was number seven.

Anna looked at the investigators.

“If she’s seven, where are the first six?”
