Chapter 1 - The Name on the Wet Paper

“Don’t touch her.”

Lucas Blackwood’s voice was barely louder than the rain pounding against the mansion windows.

It didn’t need to be.

Harold froze with his hand inches from the little girl’s chest.

Six-year-old Emma Carter stood in the center of the black marble study, soaked from the storm, clutching a folded résumé beneath an oversized cleaning apron. Water dripped from her worn sneakers and pooled around her feet.

She looked too small to be standing inside the home of Boston’s most feared man.

Yet Harold had lunged at her as though she were carrying a bomb.

“She could be wired,” the security chief warned.

Lucas slowly pushed Harold’s wrist down.

Then he placed his body between the guard and the child.

Emma’s pale blue eyes lifted toward him. She was trying not to cry, but her shoulders shook beneath the apron.

“My mommy couldn’t come,” she whispered.

Lucas crouched in front of her.

“Who sent you here?”

Emma glanced toward the study door.

Not at it.

Through it.

As if she expected someone to break it down.

“The bad men found us.”

The room went silent.

Emma unfolded the top edge of the damp résumé and pointed to a name near the top.

Lucas reached for it.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

The cold suspicion disappeared first.

Then the color drained from his skin.

His fingers tightened around the paper until the luxury watch on his wrist pressed into his skin.

Harold took one careful step backward.

Lucas stared at the name again.

Evelyn Rose.

A name that had not appeared in Boston for six years.

A name carved into a grave with no body beneath it.

A name belonging to the only woman Lucas Blackwood had ever loved.

He rose slowly and shielded Emma with his body.

“I buried that name,” he whispered.

Emma gripped the back of his suit jacket.

Then three heavy knocks struck the mansion’s front door.

Not the polite knock of a visitor.

The measured knock of someone who knew exactly who lived there.

Harold’s hand moved toward the gun beneath his jacket.

Emma began trembling harder.

“They followed me,” she breathed.

Lucas looked at Harold.

For the first time in fifteen years, the security chief saw something in his employer’s eyes that frightened him.

Not rage.
