Chapter 5 - The Secret Inside the Apron

The study door opened three inches.

Lucas fired once into the brass lock.

The sound exploded through the room.

Emma covered her ears but did not scream.

The door slammed shut from the other side.

Lucas dragged a bookcase across it while Harold stood near the wall, measuring the distance to his discarded access card.

“What did your mother put in the apron?” Lucas asked Emma.

“I don’t know.”

“Did she sew anything into it?”

Emma looked down at the oversized white fabric.

“My mommy said never take it off.”

Harold moved.

Lucas caught him by the shoulder and drove him onto a leather chair.

“Sit.”

“You need me.”

“I needed the man I thought you were.”

Lucas took a letter opener from his desk and carefully checked the apron seams.

Emma stood perfectly still.

Near the large bow at her back, his fingers felt something rigid inside the lining.

He cut one thread.

A thin black memory card slipped into his palm.

Harold’s face collapsed.

Lucas held it up.

“What’s on this?”

Harold said nothing.

Emma answered softly.

“Mommy called it the truth.”

The footsteps outside multiplied.

Lucas knew the mansion’s internal guards had either been compromised or killed. Harold had built the security system himself. Every hallway, tunnel, and camera belonged to him.

Lucas crossed to the fireplace.

Behind a carved panel was an old analog control box installed by his grandfather, disconnected from the modern network.

He pulled a brass lever.

Steel barriers dropped throughout the first floor.

A shout sounded from the hall.

Lucas had divided the intruders into isolated sections of the mansion.

Harold stared at him.

“You still remember the old system.”

“My father taught me never to trust one man with every key.”

Harold’s mouth twisted.

“Your father trusted me.”

“And he died in your car.”

Silence.

Lucas had never questioned that accident either.

Until now.

He inserted the memory card into an offline laptop hidden inside the desk.

A single video file appeared.

No title.

No date.

Lucas pressed play.

Evelyn’s face filled the screen.

She looked older, thinner, and terrified.

But alive.

“Lucas,” she said on the recording, “if Emma reached you, then Harold finally found us.”

Harold lunged from the chair.

Lucas struck him once and forced him back down.

On the screen, Evelyn took a trembling breath.

“And if he tells you I betrayed you, remember this—Harold murdered your father.”

👉 Evelyn’s recording had just reopened two graves, but her next words would reveal why she had hidden Lucas’s own daughter from him.
