Chapter 4 - The Guard Behind the Door

Lucas reached beneath his desk and removed Harold’s access card from the security console.

Every locked door in the mansion changed from green to red.

Harold’s eyes flashed.

“You’re making a mistake.”

“I made the mistake six years ago.”

Lucas guided Emma behind the heavy desk.

“Stay down.”

She caught his sleeve.

“Are you leaving me?”

The question struck harder than any bullet could have.

Lucas knelt.

“No.”

“Promise?”

He looked into the same pale blue eyes Evelyn had once turned on him whenever she knew he was lying.

“I promise.”

Lucas placed his coat around Emma’s shoulders and stood.

Harold watched the tenderness with something darker than fear.

Resentment.

“You don’t even know she’s yours,” he said.

Lucas turned.

Harold realized too late what he had admitted.

Neither Emma nor Lucas had said the word yours.

The truth hung between them.

Lucas approached him slowly.

“You knew.”

Harold’s jaw tightened.

Lucas’s voice remained quiet.

“You knew Evelyn was pregnant.”

Harold glanced toward the study door as footsteps moved through the distant hallway.

Not outside anymore.

Inside.

Someone had entered the mansion through the service wing.

Harold shifted his weight.

Lucas blocked him.

“You moved her.”

“I saved this organization.”

“From a pregnant woman?”

“From what she found.”

Emma lifted her head behind the desk.

“What did my mommy find?”

Harold’s eyes flicked toward her.

For one second, hatred replaced discipline.

Lucas saw it.

So did Emma.

She ducked lower.

Lucas grabbed Harold by the collar.

“Look at me. Not her.”

Harold smiled bitterly.

“You think Evelyn ran because she feared me? She ran because she discovered what you really owned.”

Lucas’s expression did not change.

“What?”

“The judges. The police captains. The shipping contracts. Every name. Every payment.”

Lucas’s stomach turned.

Those records did not exist.

At least, he had never authorized them.

Harold leaned closer.

“Your father built the machine. I kept it alive. Evelyn wanted to burn it down.”

A metallic click sounded from the hallway.

A weapon being prepared.

Then the study doorknob began to turn.

Harold smiled.

“They’re not here for the girl.”

Lucas looked toward Emma.

May you like

“They’re here for what her mother gave her.”

👉 Emma had arrived carrying more than a résumé and a photograph—and the people hunting her believed the final piece was still hidden on her body.
