Chapter 6 - The Lie That Stole Six Years

Lucas stood motionless before the screen.
Evelyn continued.
“Your father discovered Harold was using Blackwood companies to traffic weapons through humanitarian shipments. He planned to expose him.”
Harold laughed once.
A dry, humorless sound.
“You believe a frightened woman over the man who stood beside you?”
Lucas did not look away from the video.
“Your father asked me for help,” Evelyn said. “Before we could meet, his car went off the bridge. Harold brought me photographs of the wreck and told me you were next.”
Emma watched her mother’s recorded face.
“Mommy,” she whispered.
Evelyn’s eyes on the screen seemed to stare directly at her.
“I was pregnant. Harold said if I told you, he would kill the baby first.”
Lucas gripped the desk.
For six years, he had visited an empty grave every November.
For six years, he had blamed himself for not protecting Evelyn.
And for six years, his daughter had grown up believing her father was a dangerous stranger in an old photograph.
“I tried to contact you twice,” Evelyn continued. “Both messengers disappeared. Harold controlled your calls, your security, and everyone allowed near you.”
Lucas slowly turned toward Harold.
The security chief no longer looked ashamed.
He looked offended.
“You were weak after she died,” Harold said. “I kept the empire from collapsing.”
“You kept me blind.”
“I kept you useful.”
A violent crash echoed from the west corridor.
One of the steel barriers had been breached.
Lucas glanced at the laptop.
The video was only halfway finished.
Evelyn leaned closer to the camera.
“There is one person inside your house Harold could never control.”
The recording flickered.
The power failed.
Darkness swallowed the study.
Emma gasped.
Lucas moved instantly, lifting her into one arm and pulling her against his chest.
Emergency lights turned the room red.
Harold disappeared from the chair.
Lucas heard the faint scrape of polished shoes behind him.
Then the cold edge of a weapon pressed against his ribs.
Harold’s voice came from the darkness.
“Put the girl down.”
Lucas held Emma tighter.
“No.”
“You don’t know her.”
Lucas looked at the child clinging to his neck.
“I know enough.”
Harold cocked the weapon.
Then a woman’s voice spoke from behind the hidden library door.

“Take one more breath, Harold, and it’ll be your last.”
