Chapter 14 - The Longest Morning

Lucas reached the hospital before sunrise.

Emma sat curled in a waiting-room chair, still wearing the oversized apron.

When she saw him, she ran.

He dropped to his knees and caught her.

“Is Mommy dead?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Emma heard the uncertainty.

“You promised to come back.”

“I did.”

“You didn’t promise she would.”

Lucas held her tighter.

“I know.”

For three hours, they waited.

Lucas told Emma about Evelyn before the fear.

How she hated expensive restaurants but loved roadside pancakes.

How she once pushed him into Boston Harbor after he insulted her driving.

How she could silence a room simply by raising one eyebrow.

Emma smiled for the first time.

“She still does that.”

Federal agents moved through the hospital corridors.

Television screens showed raids on Blackwood warehouses, arrests of officials, and the seizure of millions in illegal funds.

Lucas did not watch.

At 8:17 a.m., the surgeon entered.

“The bullet damaged her liver, but we controlled the bleeding.”

Lucas stood.

“She’s alive?”

“She’s alive.”

Emma began sobbing.

Not the frightened, restrained tears she had held back all night.

These were the tears of a child finally allowed to believe she was safe.

Lucas lifted her.

She wrapped herself around him.

“Can we see her?”

“Soon.”

Agent Sloan approached with another update.

Harold had survived surgery.

Margaret had confessed fully.

Thirty-two officials had been arrested.

The Blackwood organization’s legitimate assets would be examined, while criminal proceeds would be seized.

“You may still face charges,” Sloan told Lucas.

“I understand.”

“Your cooperation matters.”

“So does the truth.”

Sloan handed him a small evidence bag.

Inside was Harold’s black ring.

Lucas looked at it once.

Then handed it back.

“I don’t want anything from him.”

Hours later, Evelyn opened her eyes.

Lucas and Emma entered together.

Emma climbed carefully beside her.

Lucas stood at the foot of the bed, suddenly uncertain.

Evelyn extended her hand.

He took it.

“We lost six years,” he said.

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“We still have the next one.”

“And the one after that,” Emma added.

Lucas bowed his head over their joined hands.

For the first time since his father’s death, he allowed himself to cry.

👉 Evelyn survived, but Lucas still had to face the final judgment: whether he could leave the Blackwood name behind and become the father Emma deserved.
