A hospital file showed she carried the original mutation.
She was the first subject.
The decryption key opened the final component.
Scientists produced an emergency dose for Lily.
But delivering it required finding Margaret.
Ortiz traced the courtroom feed through an old satellite uplink.
The signal came from the Carter family cemetery.
Agents searched the property.
Beneath Margaret’s empty grave was an elevator.
It descended into a hidden medical complex.
Margaret had built her final laboratory beneath generations of Carter headstones.
Lily and the girls were inside.
So was Sheriff Cole.
He had not betrayed Margaret.
He was her son.
Another hidden Carter child raised inside law enforcement.
Agents prepared entry.
Margaret triggered a lockdown.
Air levels began dropping in the children’s rooms.
She demanded that I enter alone with Laura.
Laura looked at me.
“We don’t both have to go.”
